Job description
Four & Twenty Blackbirds is looking for a dependable, welcoming Shift Lead to help run our counter-service coffee shop and pie bakery. This is a hands-on position: you’ll work alongside other team members while taking responsibility for smooth service, product quality, and opening or closing the shop.
This is a growth-oriented role with opportunities to take on additional responsibility and advance into management.
What You’ll Do
- Lead shifts while actively serving customers, preparing drinks, and serving bakery items
- Support the General Manager with daily shop operations
- Maintain high standards for hospitality and speed of service
- Maintain clean, organized, and well-stocked work areas
- Monitor product presentation, freshness, and availability
- Ensure completion of opening and closing procedures
- Manage cash drawers, deposits, refunds, and other cash-handling responsibilities
- Monitor inventory and report low stock to manager
- Ensure compliance with food-safety, sanitation, and workplace procedures
- Resolve routine customer concerns with warmth and good judgment
- Communicate operational issues and maintenance needs
- Complete end-of-shift reports
- Help the manager enact shop service and operational goals
- Help train new employees and reinforce shop standards
- Provide ongoing coaching and feedback to teammates after initial training
- Make recommendations to management regarding operations, staffing, and performance
- Serve as the main point of contact when the General Manager is unavailable
What We’re Looking For
- A highly skilled barista with an interest in cafe operations
- Previous coffee shop, bakery, café, restaurant, or retail experience
- Previous supervisory, shift-lead, key-holder, or management experience is preferred, but not required
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Continuous improvement mindset
- A calm, supportive leadership style
- Confidence in upholding service standards
- Willingness to give direction while working alongside the team
- Comfortable managing competing priorities during busy periods
- Comfortable handling cash and following detailed procedures
- Availability on weekends and holidays
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 30 lbs regularly and up to 50 lbs occasionally
- A NYS Food Handler’s license, or willingness to obtain one within 30 days of hire

Compensation: Hourly wage, commensurate with experience + highly competitive tips from our loyal customers
