Job description
The Assistant Grower will assist operations at DPUF from sowing seeds to crop cultivation, irrigation, harvesting, washing, and distribution - as well as assisting with educational programming, volunteer orientation and leadership, and project execution. The position involves 25-30 hours per week, weather permitting, with flexible working hours to meet project deadlines. Includes some half-day weekend shifts. There is a 4-week trial period.
The position runs through November 21,2026. Reports to Farm Manager Responsibilities include:
- Soil preparation and cultivation of crops, including tillage, fertilization and mulching Sowing seeds, watering, and other plant nursery activities
- Harvesting, washing, and packing vegetables, herbs and flowers
- Assist with property maintenance including mowing, clearing brush, and invasive species removal
- Operation and maintenance of small machinery, tools, and equipment*
- Installation and operation of irrigation systems*
- Staff some farmers markets of CSA pickup days and assist with event setup, activities and cleanup
- Liaise with community partners that use the farm
- Work with staff to recruit, train, and monitor farm volunteers
- Assist with volunteer orientations and supervise volunteer sub-groups on group work days
- Assist with outreach, coordination, and/or implementation of other projects, as needed
- Assisting the Farm Manager in all other farm duties, as needed
Qualifications: Candidate should have an interest in farming/gardening Driver’s license required. Capable of demanding and repetitive physical labor, including lifting 50+ pounds safely and repeatedly and performing well in all weather conditions Able to safely operate landscape equipment* Strong communication skills Excellent attention to detail Good organization skills Ability to work independently or as part of a team Must be prompt, responsible, and focused Good customer service skills Ability to operate a Point-of-Sale system preferred Bi-lingual in Spanish is preferred but not required.
*Training will be provided when needed
Salary and Benefits
This is a seasonal position paid at an hourly rate of $19-$20/hr DOE. Employees earn 8 hours of paid time off for each 130 hours worked and the position includes up to 3 paid federal holidays during the term.
Completion of Term bonus: Upon successful completion of the term the employee will be eligible for a cash bonus equivalent to $100 per week, up to a maximum of $1,500 for 15 weeks worked. To receive the bonus, the employee must have worked an average of at least 25 hours per week (including any accrued PTO or holiday time off) and be in good standing upon the completion of the term.
