Job description
Start Date: As soon as September 15, 2026 (flexible for the right candidate)
Commitment: Through the 2027 farming season
Full-Time–Winter schedule approx. 30 hours; Regular season 40+ hours per week
Light Root Farm & Learning Center is seeking an experienced and motivated farmer who is serious about pursuing agriculture as a career and interested in deepening their skills in dairy, livestock, grazing, and holistic farm management.
This is a hands-on Assistant Farm Manager position for someone who already has a foundation of agricultural experience and is ready to take the next step in their development as a farmer. The successful candidate will work closely with the farm leadership team, learn Light Root’s farm systems and operations, and gradually take on greater responsibility and ownership of the dairy and small livestock operations.
We are looking for someone who sees farming as a long-term vocation and craft. This position offers the opportunity to grow with the farm and, over time, develop into a greater management role.
Primary Responsibilities
● Daily milking and care of a small herd of dairy cows
● Feeding, watering, animal observation, and general herd management
● Dairy house cleaning, sanitation, and milk bottling
● Barn and livestock maintenance
● Mucking sheds and maintaining clean, healthy animal environments
● Calf and youngstock care
● Pasture-based laying hen care and egg production
● Pasture pig management and rotational grazing support
● Assisting with cattle grazing and pasture management
● General farm chores and seasonal livestock projects
● Manure management and compost making with skid loader
● Support Hay making and field irrigation
● Assist with and support Light Root Farm’s educational, community, and
therapeutic programs
● As skills and experience develop, take on increasing responsibility for livestock systems,
farm planning, and day-to-day management
● Possible opportunities to work in other roles on the farm–draft horses/oxen, gardens and
crop systems.
What We’re Looking For
● At least 2 seasons of agricultural experience; dairy experience strongly preferred
● Serious interest in pursuing farming as a career
● Desire to continue learning and developing skills in dairy, livestock, grazing, and farm
management
● Reliable, responsible, self-motivated, and willing to take initiative
● Strong communication and teamwork skills
● Commitment to quality work, thorough cleaning, and attention to detail
● Physically able to regularly lift and carry 50+ pounds
● Comfortable working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
● Passion for agriculture, animals, food, land stewardship, and community
● Alignment with Light Root Farm’s mission and values
Schedule & Compensation
$20–$24/hour, depending on experience, with room for growth as skills and responsibilities
develop.
Regular season: approximately 40 hours/week
Winter: approximately 30 hours/week
The schedule includes 5–6 early mornings per week, and 3-4 evening chore shifts, and includes
weekends. We are looking for someone with the flexibility to work with the seasonal rhythms
and responsibilities of a working livestock farm and dairy.
We are hoping to welcome someone to the team around September 15, 2026, but the start date can be somewhat flexible this Fall for the right candidate.
Compensation
this position is: hourly, $20/hr +
