We are seeking a Vegetable Production Manager. This position is an integral part of our full-time staff and coordinates all aspects of vegetable production outdoors and indoors. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for developing and leading a team to productively grow the highest quality vegetables in an ecological growing system with standards meeting and exceeding organic certification.

General Description of the Position:
The Vegetable Production Manager will lead all aspects of vegetable farming for a dynamic multi-market production schedule including produce boxes, bulk contract production, farmers’ markets, and on-site prepared foods kitchen, as well as restaurants. This position is responsible for managing production from soil through sales, developing and working alongside the market farm crew, building new production areas as needed, and managing all vegetable farm work including detailed record keeping, crop planning, and farm crew dynamics. A passion and commitment to generating high-quality produce is required with a primary focus on existing human scale market gardens and secondarily expanding production to tractor-based alley cropping for certain crops. The Vegetable Production Manager is a key position within the Reed's Farm ecosystem. We are seeking candidates with leadership skill and a joyful approach to the work they do. This position reports to the Farm Director and is supported by the vegetable farm crew. This is a full-time, year-round position.
Key Responsibilities:
- Developing the skillsets of all vegetable crew positions (approximately 3-5 people)
- Maintaining work ethic and positivity
- Able to inspire throughout long days of physical, repetitive work in all weather conditions.
- Attention to detail; must maintain high quality standards and follow food safety protocols while working quickly and efficiently
- Keeping detailed harvest records in a timely manner
- Managing propagation: seeding/direct sow/transplant management
- Collaborating with Farm Director to create plans for carrying out production
- Year round growing in multiple high tunnels and greenhouses
- Utilizing human scale market farming methods for soil health and minimizing tillage using silage tarps, broadforking, cover cropping, walk behind tractors, and other modern market garden tools and methods
- On time management of pests, disease, and weeds
- Monitoring plant health and quality from propagation to harvest
- Using all farm tools including walk behind tractors and riding tractors
- Ensuring all tools are cared for, cleaned, and put in the proper place after use
- Collaborating and working with all team members from the chefs in the kitchen to the agroforestry staff to administrators
- Physical demands of the job include frequent lifting of heavy objects, working outside in all seasons, outdoor physical labor
Required Experience and Skill:
- Minimum five years of vegetable farming experience, including at least one year in a farm manager or assistant farm manager position
- Experience with no and low-till vegetable production systems including silage tarping, broadforking, cover cropping, and other modern market garden tools
- Experience with season extension, high tunnel and/or greenhouse production systems, and year round growing
- Commitment to organic, regenerative, and innovative agricultural practices
- Crop planning experience and basic computer skills, including Google suite and Excel
- Must be capable of meeting the physical demands of the job, including: frequent lifting of heavy objects; working outside in all seasons; strenuous physical labor
- Driver's license required to fulfill job duties
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Strong work ethic and positive attitude; able to keep up morale throughout long days of physical, repetitive work in all weather conditions
- Comfortable working both individually and on a team
- Able to provide and receive constructive feedback skillfully
- Able to teach skills to others effectively
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in agroecology, sustainable agriculture, biology, environmental science, or a related field
- Experience and comfortable operating walk-behind and/or 25+hp tractors
- Permaculture Design Course Certificate (PDC)
- Ability to drive a manual transmission
Compensation and Benefits:
- $55-$70k per year depending on experience
