Job description
Join Our Cheese Team
We’re looking for a part-time Cheesemonger to join our team at Greene Grape Provisions. This is a permanent position offering up to 30 hours per week, with weekend availability required.
You’ll work alongside our cheese team cutting, wrapping, tasting, stocking, building platters, making fresh mozzarella, and helping customers find something delicious for their tables. Our counter features a wide-ranging selection of cheeses and accompaniments from producers we care about, and we’re looking for someone excited to learn the stories, traditions, and flavors behind them.
Cheese experience is a plus, but curiosity, reliability, attention to detail, and a genuine desire to learn are just as important. We’re looking for someone who enjoys great food, takes pride in their work, and wants to grow their cheese knowledge as part of a collaborative team.
What You'll Do:
- Cut and wrap cheese and charcuterie for customers and our grab-and-go case
- Learn about, taste, and confidently talk with customers about the cheeses and specialty foods we carry
- Help customers choose cheeses, charcuterie, and accompaniments for everything from weeknight dinners to special occasions
- Make fresh mozzarella for retail sale and in-house production
- Stock and merchandise cheeses, jams, honeys, dried fruits, nuts, and other accompaniments
- Keep our cheese cases, beer fridge, and displays full, organized, and inviting
- Assist with cheese and charcuterie platters, online orders, and catering
- Perform daily quality checks, properly rotate products using FIFO, and identify products that need trimming, rewrapping, or pulling
- Receive deliveries and keep storage and backstock areas organized
- Maintain accurate, attractive product signage
- Learn and follow department systems, including opening and closing procedures, cleaning routines, and product organization
- Communicate with the team about low stock, quality issues, customer requests, and other department needs
- Participate in quarterly inventory counts and other periodic department projects
- Follow food safety, sanitation, and department procedures
- Pitch in across the department and store when needed
What We're Looking For:
- A genuine interest in cheese, food, and hospitality
- Friendly, thoughtful, and attentive customer service
- Curiosity and enthusiasm for tasting, learning about, and developing a deeper knowledge of cheese and specialty foods
- Reliability, attention to detail, and the ability to stay organized in a busy environment
- A collaborative, positive approach to working with a team
- Ability to maintain a consistent weekly schedule, including weekends, evenings, and holidays
- Ability to work on your feet for extended shifts, regularly use stairs, and lift up to 50 lbs unassisted
- Previous cheese, specialty food, grocery, restaurant, or retail experience is welcome, but we encourage enthusiastic food people who are excited to learn to apply
Compensation & Benefits:
- $18–$20.50 per hour, based on experience.
- Medical, dental, and vision healthcare options with employer contribution for eligible employees
- Paid sick and vacation time accrued on an hourly basis
- Pre-tax transit benefits
- Generous employee discounts at Greene Grape businesses and participating neighborhood businesses
- Access to our community fridge and pantry, stocked with product overflow available to staff
- Discounted shift meal
- Plenty of opportunities to taste, learn about, and work with some really great cheese
