MX Morningstar Farm was established in 2014 and grows a wide array of certified organic vegetables on 40 acres in Hudson, New York. We sell our produce through our onsite Farm Store, a CSA, and wholesale distributors throughout Eastern New York, Western Connecticut, New York City, and the Berkshires.

Our main crops include potatoes, squash, tomatoes, melons, cauliflower, cabbage, sweet potatoes, carrots, beets, radishes, and turnips. Most of our acreage is in fall-harvested crops for sales through the winter and early spring.

Our Farm Store is a year-round, bustling retail destination located on our farm. We specialize in offering high quality produce, specialty varieties, local meat, dairy, baked goods, and much more!

Job description

OVERVIEW

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic person to join our production team! The assistant operator will work closely with the farm managers in the operation of the farm’s tillage, planting, and cultivation equipment. The operator will also assist on our harvest team or on other projects as needed.

Previous tractor work is required, but we will train you to work with our equipment. This position is suitable for both entry-level and more advanced operators with training, responsibility, and pay adjusted accordingly.

The position is year-round and full time. Hours vary between 32-55/week depending on the season. Please note we expect equipment operators to work around the boundaries of weather - this can mean switching weekends for weekdays off to get ahead of rain and planting schedules

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Including but not limited to
  • transplanting, cultivating, bulk tillage, bed prep, irrigation, and harvest.
  • Operating 75-95 hp tractors with a variety of implements
  • Basic up-keep of machinery; i.e. lubricating grease points, power washing, cleaning of operator stations.
  • Aiding in the harvesting and/or washing of produce when machinery operation is not needed.
  • Field cleanup (plastic, stakes, twine, irrigation, landscape fabric etc..)
  • Other farm related tasks as needed
  • Winter work will include washing & packing produce for wholesale, equipment cleaning and maintenance, office work (logs, research, planning), general grounds cleanup and organization, and other miscellaneous projects

PREFERRED BACKGROUND SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

• 3+ years experience on a commercial vegetable farm
• Varied equipment experience
• Strong work ethic and great attitude
• Ability to work quickly and efficiently without supervision
• Bilingual verbal capabilities preferred (Spanish and English)
• Must be able to safely lift 50+ lbs

SCHEDULE

• April/May - December: Monday - Friday 7:30am - 4:30/5pm
• January - March/April: 4 days/week approx. 8hr days
• There is an alternating half day Saturday schedule May - August (one on, one off)
• There is a half day Saturday schedule September & October for harvest season

• $22/hr-$26/hr based on experience
