We are a small farm with a large vision to provide Northern California's, upper Sacramento Valley community with pasture raised pork, 100% grass fed/finished beef, and certified organic vegetables and herbs. We produce food for a year-round Farmers Market and Vegetable CSA program. We are looking for a hard-working and contagiously positive individual to support and expand vegetable production in our 2-acre market garden.
Job description
We are looking for an experienced market gardener to assist the owners in fostering a fun but hardworking and productive working environment that will ensure quality yields of nutritious and certified organic food for our community. With an eye on ensuring the integrity of our soil building, low till, regenerative practices, the Production Manager (PM) is responsible for leading our field team on daily harvests and work plan execution. The candidate is someone who brings a solid amount of management experience to the farm and is comfortable with hiring, training, leading, and providing performance reviews. The candidate may be someone who loves to farm but prefers managing the operational side of production as opposed to managing the bookkeeping and customer service side of the business.
Skills & Qualifications
· Minimum of 3 years of experience in a productive market garden, preferably Certified Organic.
· Ability and willingness to perform physical work with a good attitude in a variety of weather conditions.
· Must be able to lift 50lb occasionally and 30lb regularly without strain.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
· Experience managing a field crew.
· Reliable, on time, proactive and prepared.
· Strong organizational skills and attention to details and efficiencies.
· Experience with running small tractors and machinery (esp. BCS walk behind tractor) preferred.
· Experience with Jang & EarthWay seeders. (We currently use the JP5 & EarthWay)
· Familiarity or experience with crop planning software, Excel, or other record keeping tools.
· Must have knowledge of and be willing to adhere to organic practices.

This position requires individuals who have a high capacity for getting things done while always keeping the bigger picture in mind and staying one step ahead of the needs of the crew.
· Must bring a positive leadership attitude and experience leading a team.
· Must ensure all tasks are completed according to the SOPs and our Health and Safety Plan.
· Must be able to communicate clearly with crew members and leaders as well as offer constructive criticism graciously.
· Must be prepared each day with weather- and job-appropriate clothing and all field gear necessary to perform duties. This person must know what it means to truly be “field ready.”
· Must be willing to do what it takes to help the farm succeed, remaining flexible and open to change is a must.
Accountability & Responsibilities:
The PM will participate in weekly meetings with the owners to discuss schedule, plans, and tasks for the week. The owners are still actively engaged in the farming business and will rely heavily on the PM to ensure daily irrigation, work plans, and harvests are completed with efficiency and accuracy. This position’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
· Harvest Lead: ensures proper bunch sizes and techniques are used during harvest for consistency and food safety protocols.
· Work Plan Lead: ensures SOP’s are followed for irrigation, weeding, mulching, feeding, soil tests, foliar/fertigation, bed turns, transplanting, use of seeders (Jang 5, EarthWay).
· Recording: ensures that all inputs, plantings, and direct seedings are recorded and labeled accurately and regularly.
· Assisting with creation and execution of SOP’s: We are actively building SOP’s for all areas of the farm.
· Marketing: the position does not require working the farmers markets unless an emergency arises.
· Attend and assist with execution of all CSA events and when scheduled, including one Sunday in October for our Fall Potluck.
Compensation
this position is: hourly, varies DOE, $25.00 - $28.00
