Job description
Prep/Line Cook
Position Overview
The Cook is responsible for supporting daily kitchen operations by preparing ingredients, maintaining a clean and organized workspace, and ensuring all food is handled safely and efficiently. This role is essential to maintaining consistency, quality, and speed in the café’s food service. The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, and able to work in a fast-paced environment
Key Responsibilities:
Food Preparation
Prepare ingredients for service, including washing, cutting, chopping, and portioning
Follow recipes and portion standards to ensure consistency and quality
Assist in assembling menu items as needed during service
Label and store all prepared items properly, following food safety guidelines
Kitchen Operations:
Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient prep station
Set up and break down prep areas at the beginning and end of shifts
Ensure all kitchen tools and equipment are cleaned and properly stored after use
Support line cooks and kitchen staff during busy service periods
Food Safety & Sanitation
Follow all food safety and hygiene standards, including proper handwashing and glove use
Ensure proper storage, rotation, and labeling of ingredients (FIFO method)
Monitor food quality and report any concerns to kitchen leadership
Maintain compliance with local health regulations
Inventory & Organization
Assist with receiving and organizing deliveries
Help track inventory levels of ingredients and notify management of low stock
Ensure all food items are stored in appropriate containers and locations
Cleaning & Maintenance
Clean and sanitize all kitchen surfaces, equipment, and prep areas
Assist with dishwashing and maintaining cleanliness of shared kitchen spaces
Take out trash, recycling, and compost as needed
Qualifications
Valid NYS Food Handler’s License
2 Years previous experience as a prep cook or in a kitchen environment preferred
Basic knowledge of food safety and kitchen sanitation practices
Ability to follow recipes and instructions accurately
Strong time management and organizational skills
Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to [insert weight, e.g., 30–50 lbs]
Reliable, punctual, and a team player
Bilingual (Spanish/English) Preferred
Work Environment
Fast-paced kitchen environment with exposure to heat, sharp tools, and kitchen equipment
Requires standing, bending, and repetitive tasks throughout the shift
May include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays
Compensation
this position is: hourly, $16.50 - 20/hr
