Blue Moon Acres is a family-owned, Certified Organic and regenerative farm with locations in Pennington, New Jersey, and Buckingham, Pennsylvania. Founded by Jim and Kathy Lyons in 1992, Blue Moon Acres began as a small Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm and has grown into a diversified agricultural business known for producing exceptional microgreens, specialty greens, edible flowers, vegetables, and locally grown rice.
Our 63-acre Pennington, NJ farm is located on preserved farmland and is home to our Certified Organic field production, including baby salad greens, vegetables, specialty crops, and rice. Our Buckingham, PA farm serves as our operating base and specializes in year-round greenhouse production of more than 60 varieties of microgreens, along with seasonal herbs, edible flowers, and vegetables.
For more than three decades, Blue Moon Acres has built its reputation around quality, freshness, and responsible farming. Our products serve restaurants and chefs throughout the region, including the New York and Philadelphia markets, while our farm markets, online store, produce programs, and retail partnerships connect our food directly with local consumers.
Sustainability and soil health are central to how we farm. At our Pennington operation, we continually explore and implement agricultural practices designed to improve soil structure, increase soil carbon, support diverse microbial and fungal populations, improve nutrient availability, and grow healthier, more resilient crops. Our approach incorporates regenerative agriculture principles and Korean Natural Farming techniques, with an emphasis on building biologically active soils rather than relying on conventional chemical inputs.
Blue Moon Acres also grows and mills Certified Organic rice in Pennington—an unusual crop for New Jersey and an example of the farm's willingness to experiment, innovate, and develop new approaches to local food production. Our rice is freshly husked and milled regularly and is grown with the same focus on soil biology, crop health, quality, and sustainability that guides the rest of our farming operation.
In 2018, Blue Moon Acres was named New Jersey Farm Local Hero by readers of Edible New Jersey, recognizing the farm's contribution to the state's local food and agricultural community.
Despite our growth, Blue Moon Acres remains a hands-on, family-run farming business. We combine decades of practical growing experience with a willingness to test new ideas, technologies, equipment, and farming techniques. 63-Acre Established USDA Certified Organic Farm | Vegetables & Dryland Rice.
Blue Moon Acres is seeking an experienced farmer to lead operations on our 63-acre USDA Certified Organic farm, in continuous operation for 35 years.
This is a senior, hands-on management position with substantial responsibility for the farm: crop planning, field operations, soil fertility, planting through harvest, equipment, managing crews, organic and food safety record management and compliance, and continuous improvement of our production systems.
But we’re looking for more than an excellent farm operator.
Our larger goal is to explore how healthy we can make the plants we grow—and how nutrient-rich and flavorful the resulting food can become.
We are particularly interested in the relationships among soil health, mineral nutrition, soil biology, plant physiology, nutrient density, and resistance to disease and insect pressure.
The right person does not need to be an expert in all of these areas. We are looking for an experienced farmer who is curious, observant, open-minded, and empirical—someone interested in working closely with ownership to evaluate new ideas, conduct practical on-farm trials, measure results, and incorporate what works into a successful commercial farming system.
We’re looking for someone who:
Has 5+ years of commercial farming experience, preferably in organic vegetable production, including management responsibility.
Can confidently manage crops, crews, equipment, schedules, and day-to-day farm operations.
Can work physically in all weather conditions, lift 50+ lbs., operate tractors, forklift, and other farm machinery.
Has a strong understanding of soils, fertility, and plant nutrition.
Enjoys solving problems and continually improving production systems.
Is interested in biological and regenerative agriculture without being dogmatic about any particular approach.
Is willing to question assumptions, experiment, measure results, and change course when the evidence warrants it.
Spanish fluency is a plus.
Wants substantial responsibility and the opportunity to make a long-term impact on an established farm.
Start date flexible.
Experience growing rice is welcome but not required.
