Pete’s Greens is a certified organic, four-season vegetable farm located on the edge of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom in Craftsbury, VT. We believe wholeheartedly that as more Vermonters eat locally, we will become healthier as communities and as individuals. That is why we grow a wide range of organic produce that is available through our weekly food delivery program, our seasonal Craftsbury Farmstand, and at restaurants, co-ops, grocery stores, schools, and more across Vermont and nearby in New England.

We grow about 200 varieties of vegetables on over 300 acres of land. Our selection of organic produce includes all your standards as well as interesting and unique specialty vegetables with an emphasis on baby greens, heirloom tomatoes, and root crops.

Job description

We are seeking someone to join our vegetable farming team in Craftsbury. We are looking for someone who has worked on vegetable farms and has experience with washhouse work and some experience with greenhouse and propagation work. We’d be thrilled to find someone who has a couple of years growing vegetable crops commercially in greenhouses. But we are also willing to train someone who is confident they want a career in vegetable farming and who has spent time working on a commercial vegetable farm. Our greenhouses are an important part of our year-round organic vegetable operation, supporting seedling production, transplant production, and greenhouse-grown crops throughout the season.

The Greenhouse Lead will be responsible for keeping greenhouse work organized, timely, and consistent while maintaining healthy plants and high production standards. This is a hands-on position that combines crop care, planning, organization, and staff leadership.

Responsibilities

• Manage day-to-day greenhouse operations
• Complete weeding, seeding, and transplanting tasks according to crop database schedule
• Develop clear daily and weekly greenhouse priorities
• Coordinate timing of seeding and transplant tasks with overall farm needs
• Monitor plant health, growth, watering needs, fertility, pests, diseases, temperature, and greenhouse conditions
• Maintain accurate seeding, propagation, and production records
• Coordinate needed greenhouse labor with field planting and overall farm production needs
• Organize greenhouse space efficiently as crops move through different stages of production
• Train and supervise employees carrying out greenhouse tasks
• Maintain greenhouse sanitation and food-safety standards
• Monitor and maintain irrigation and greenhouse systems
• Identify problems early and communicate equipment, crop, pest, or infrastructure concerns
• Work directly alongside the crew in greenhouses AND in the washhouse
• Assist with other farm production work weekly (greenhouse tasks are not full-time)

Winter Responsibilities

The Greenhouse Lead is a year-round position, although the work changes considerably with the seasons. During the winter, responsibilities may include:

• Monitoring the quality and condition of stored vegetables
• Helping with seed starting and transplant production
• Assisting with winter greenhouse work
• Helping cover and uncover greenhouse crops and tunnels as weather and temperatures require
• Working in the washhouse with vegetable washing, packing, and order preparation
• Assisting with other winter farm projects and production needs

We're Looking for Someone Who Is

• Dependable, organized, and exceptionally attentive to detail
• Comfortable independently managing a production area
• Able to plan ahead while responding quickly to changing plant and weather conditions
• A clear communicator and attentive crew leader
• Interested in plants, vegetable production, and organic agriculture
• Comfortable keeping accurate records and production schedules
• Able to recognize crop-health issues and troubleshoot problems
• Willing to learn, accept and absorb feedback and instruction, ask questions, and continually improve production systems
• Comfortable with the physical demands of greenhouse work, including standing, bending, repetitive work, and lifting
• Previous commercial vegetable production, greenhouse vegetable production or farm management experience is strongly preferred.
• Some Spanish language skills are a plus
• Experience with organic vegetable production, greenhouse environmental controls, irrigation systems, pest management, and propagation planning is especially valuable.

Schedule

This is a year-round position. Hours and workload fluctuate seasonally, with greenhouse production being particularly busy during propagation and transplant season.

Some early mornings, weekends, or schedule flexibility are required for watering, weather events, or crop needs.
