Pete’s Greens is a certified organic, four-season vegetable farm located on the edge of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom in Craftsbury, VT. We believe wholeheartedly that as more Vermonters eat locally, we will become healthier as communities and as individuals. That is why we grow a wide range of organic produce that is available through our weekly food delivery program, our seasonal Craftsbury Farmstand, and at restaurants, co-ops, grocery stores, schools, and more across Vermont and nearby in New England.

We grow about 200 varieties of vegetables on over 300 acres of land. Our selection of organic produce includes all your standards as well as interesting and unique specialty vegetables with an emphasis on baby greens, heirloom tomatoes, and root crops.

Job description

Pete’s Greens is looking for a dependable, organized, and hardworking Washhouse Lead to lead our year-round vegetable washing, packing, and order fulfillment operation.

Our washhouse is where vegetables move from the field into CSA shares and wholesale orders. The Washhouse Lead plays a central role in making sure that work is organized, efficient, food-safe, and completed to our quality standards.

This is a hands-on position. The Washhouse Lead works alongside the crew while coordinating staff, setting priorities, communicating with other farm departments, and making sure orders are packed accurately and on time.

Responsibilities

• Manage daily washhouse operations and workflow
  Lead and supervise washhouse and packing staff
• Develop daily work plans and assign tasks based on harvests, orders, staffing, and deadlines
• Coordinate closely with field, CSA, wholesale, and office teams
• Oversee washing, trimming, sorting, weighing, packing, and storage of vegetables
• Ensure vegetables meet Pete’s Greens quality standards
• Make sure CSA and wholesale orders are packed accurately and efficiently
• Train employees in vegetable handling, packing standards, food safety, equipment use, and washhouse procedures
• Maintain a clean, organized, and food-safe work environment
• Ensure cleaning and sanitation procedures and documentation are completed consistently
• Help maintain FSMA and food-safety systems and records
• Monitor inventory of vegetables, packaging materials, boxes, labels, and other washhouse supplies
  Identify workflow problems and help develop practical solutions
• Communicate equipment or facility maintenance needs
• Help manage labor efficiently and adjust staffing or priorities when necessary
• Work directly alongside the crew during busy production periods

• Calm and practical when schedules or priorities change
• Comfortable making decisions and solving problems
• Attentive to cleanliness, organization, and food safety
• Comfortable with basic math, weights, quantities, order sheets, and recordkeeping
• Willing to work hard and lead by example
• Physically capable of regularly lifting approximately 25–30 lbs and occasionally lifting up to 50 lbs
• Previous experience in vegetable production is a plus, food production, warehouse operations, packing, kitchens, manufacturing, or other fast-paced production environments is helpful.

Previous management or crew-lead experience is strongly preferred.

Farm experience is valuable but not required for a candidate with strong production-management skills and a willingness to learn vegetables and farm systems.

Basic Spanish is a plus and very helpful

Schedule
This is a year-round, full-time position.

Our washhouse generally operates Monday through Friday, with earlier starts on some production days.

Hours may fluctuate somewhat seasonally depending on harvest volume, CSA schedules, wholesale orders, and staffing needs.

Specific schedule expectations will be discussed during the interview process.
