Baker and Commons is a locally owned and operated cafe in he historic Elmwood Neighborhood in Berkeley. We make everything from scratch from our salad dressings to our buttermilk biscuits. We are in our 8th year and have a very popular following with local neighbors and the UC Berkeley community. Our menu reflects what is seasonably available and we pride ourselves with having a keen eye on all the details. We offer breakfast, house made baked goods, lunch, house made spritzers, espresso drinks, beer and wine. A true neighborhood place!

We are in our 8th year and have a well established and popular baking program. We are looking for our next bakery leader to take us into a new era. We are a corner cafe with a bustling atmosphere and a welcoming spirit.

Job Description

The Head Baker not only bakes the daily items, but leads the baking team with professionalism and an eye on what is seasonal.

We are looking for someone with: dough knowledge

experience baking pies, tarts and cake

management experience

organization skills

experience training others

creative/seasonal ideas

Job duties:

making all of the items on our baking menu

keeping the station organized, clean and sanitized

scheduling all bakers on a monthly basis

training and mentoring

ordering

inventory

Job Requirements

Culinary school training or the equivalent

2+ years working in the restaurant/baking industry

Positive spirit and dedication to service

Lifting 50#

Standing on your feet for 6-9 hours

Other Details:

Shifts are 5:30am-2pm or 7:30am-3:30pm or 9-5, or 1-8. Flexibility to work any shift is necessary.

5 days/week, 40 hours/week
Must be available some weekends.

Pay is hourly DOE, plus $7/hour in tips

We are a small, efficient kitchen team. Your workspace is unique in that you are working in the public space of our dining room, outside the kitchen. We have our own recipes for you to follow. You will be leading our baking team with 3-4 assistants and will be working with 1-2 other cooks in the kitchen throughout your shift every day.

Compensation

this position is: hourly, $20/hr +
