Job description
We’re looking for a cooking instructor who enjoys teaching and helping young people feel at home in the kitchen. You’ll work with younger children and teens, including neurodivergent students and students with other disabilities, guiding them through recipes and helping them build practical skills at their own pace.
This is a hands-on role for someone who brings patience, clear instruction, and a love of cooking. Professional chef experience is welcome but not required.
What you’ll do
Deliver classes alongside an occupational therapist, leading cooking instruction.
Lead recipe development, with the occupational therapist adapting recipes to participants’ needs.
Follow the occupational therapist’s learning goals, curriculum, teaching methods, and approach to skills check-ins.
Plan and shop for ingredients as needed, and help with setup and cleanup.
Keep classes calm, organized, and encouraging.
Follow kitchen-safety, allergy, and child-safeguarding procedures, and promptly report concerns.
Write brief class notes and communicate with parents or caregivers when needed.
What you’ll bring
Confidence preparing basic meals and explaining cooking techniques.
Experience teaching, mentoring, tutoring, or working with young people.
Respect for different ways of learning and a willingness to learn about autism, ADHD, and other disabilities.
Patience, reliability, and a collaborative approach.
Position details
Part-time, W-2 position in person in Manhattan; one opening.
Mondays, noon–7 p.m., including shopping, preparation, teaching two or three classes, and cleanup. The role also includes recipe development and brief notes to families. Exact class times are to be determined; please share your availability between noon and 7 p.m. Additional opportunities may include one-on-one classes, online classes, and events, with details and scheduling to be determined.
Fixed $30 per hour for all work time, including training and work outside class hours.
Immediate start for fall programming.
Training provided, including initial shadowing.
