Company description
Culikid is a small New York City nonprofit that offers hands-on cooking programs for children and teens of all abilities. We use cooking as a practical way to teach real-life skills, helping students build confidence and become more independent in their daily lives. Our classes offer a calm, supportive environment where students can learn at their own pace.
Job description
We’re looking for an occupational therapist who wants to help young people build independence through cooking. You’ll work with younger children and teens, including neurodivergent students and students with other disabilities, using everyday kitchen activities to teach practical skills.
This is an educational group cooking program focused on participation and practical learning. You’ll adapt activities to students’ abilities, communication styles, and pace, creating a structured and encouraging environment for learning.
What you’ll do
Run simple skills check-ins at the start of the semester, set practical learning goals for each class, and design the curriculum and teaching methods, guiding the cooking instructor in using them.
Adapt recipes developed by the cooking instructor to students’ abilities and learning goals.
Deliver classes alongside the cooking instructor, supporting fine motor skills, sequencing, sensory regulation, and executive functioning.
Help with ingredient planning, shopping, setup, and cleanup as needed.
Follow kitchen-safety, allergy, and child-safeguarding procedures, and promptly report concerns.
Communicate with families and share monthly and end-of-semester class updates.
What you’ll bring
A current New York State occupational therapist license and registration.
Experience working with children and teens with different abilities and support needs, including autism, ADHD, developmental disabilities, sensory needs, and executive functioning challenges.
Skill at turning functional goals into practical, age-appropriate group activities.
Comfort in the kitchen and confidence communicating with families.
Patience, careful observation, dependable follow-through, and strong organization.
