Summer: peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, summer squash, eggplant, etc.
Trees: a variety of fruit and olive trees throughout the property
Job description
We’re looking for an experienced Head Farm Manager to work alongside the owners and carry the farm’s legacy forward. You’ll lead a crew of 2-3 people, including long-term team members with deep knowledge of the farm. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone with a strong work ethic, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a commitment to quality.
Responsibilities
Crop planning: Build and run year-round crop plans, including planting schedules, rotations, and harvest timelines that maximize quality and yield.
Soil health: Steward the soil that 30+ years of organic farming have built. Manage cover cropping, compost and organic amendments, reduced tillage where practical, and regular soil testing, and track soil fertility and structure over time.
Field operations: Direct planting, irrigation, weeding, fertility, and organic pest management. Work alongside the crew and set the standard for productivity and quality, and manage weather-related risks.
Equipment and infrastructure: Operate tractors and implements, and oversee maintenance and repair of equipment, pumps, and irrigation systems.
Harvest and sales: Coordinate harvests, post-harvest handling, and packing for the Santa Monica markets and restaurant accounts. Work closely with the market and restaurant team to forecast supply and availability each week and season, so they can plan sales, take orders, and keep chefs informed. Market sales and restaurant deliveries are handled by our market team; occasional market visits are encouraged to stay connected with customers and chefs, but they are not required.
Team leadership: Hire, train, and supervise year-round and seasonal staff, and build a cohesive, productive team.
Budget: Work with the owners on the farm budget to improve profitability and reduce waste.
Organic compliance: Maintain CCOF certification standards and the records that support them.
