POSITION TITLE: Research Scientist and Manager, PFI Cooperators’ Program

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Conduct literature review, design on-farm projects, analyze data, write and edit reports for Practical Farmers’ onfarm research
• Manage the PFI Cooperators' Program, including leading the priority setting process, overseeing meeting arrangements, and conducting evaluation efforts on our effectiveness
• Lead field sampling for research and demonstration projects*
• Administer grants, follow up with partners and subcontractors, meet program deliverables, write grant reports
• Help fundraise for the Cooperators’ Program
• Work with Sarah Carlson to most effectively implement cover crop outreach work and markets for third crops

SALARY: $40-50,000 plus benefits, depending on experience

EXPECTATIONS:

• Masters or PhD in agronomy or related topic is highly recommended
• Three years’ experience working with farmers on on-farm research is a requirement
• Must be a team player
• Must be patient with sometimes imperfect research efforts
• Must have the ability to work in a very fast-paced office
• Some evening and weekend work required as well as some long days
• Successful candidate will want to attend 6-12 field days or workshops with farmers per year
• Farmers set the priorities; PFI staff does not tell them what they should be interested in
• Our farmers’ priority is not published papers but actual change on their farms
• Must work out of PFI’s Ames, Iowa, office
