Job description
The
Assistant Farmer will work directly with and support the Farmer in all aspects of crop production and distribution. The Assistant Farmer will share responsibility with the farmer for seed propagation, planting and maintenance, coordinating harvests and distribution, record keeping, and the overseeing of interns, harvest crew, and other part time farm staff. Additionally, the Assistant Farmer will participate in the management of our 90+ young fruit trees, a small flock of laying hens, several beehives, and a substantial hop production. Alewife Farm is a 40-acre, for-profit farm along the banks of
Wappinger Creek in
Dutchess County. Our focus is specialty produce for sale to a diverse range of outlets, primarily restaurants and other wholesale accounts both in NYC and the greater Hudson Valley. The majority of the farm’s production space is managed in a no-till system and the entire farm is managed using only organic methods.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
-At least two years of prior farming experience with a substantial focus on vegetable production.
-Strong interest in sustainable agricultural practices.
-Ability to lift 50 lbs and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
-At least some prior experience in tractor operation and maintenance, preferably including some familiarity with a spader.
-Some experience with carpentry and/or light construction.
-Prior experience or interest in working with livestock animals and honeybees.
-Prior experience or interest in cultivation of fruit, hops, and other perennial crops.
-Substantial interest in farm business management. An ideal candidate would have a clear and demonstrated goal of eventually owning and/or operating their own farm business.
