Job description
America's Test Kitchen is a real place: a no-nonsense, fully equipped test kitchen located just outside of Boston, where a team of highly qualified test cooks and editors perform thousands of tests every year. The goal? To develop the best recipes and cooking techniques, recommend the best cookware and equipment, and rate brand-name pantry staples for home cooks, which are published in our two magazines: Cook's Illustrated and Cook's Country, our growing line of cookbooks, websites and public television series, America's Test Kitchen and Cook's Country TV.
We are devoted to a collegial approach to cooking--teams of editors, writers and cooks engage in side by side comparisons, blind taste tests, and rigorous equipment performance tests to determine which pans work and which one's don't.
Kitchen interns will work on two of our four primary cooking teams throughout their internship: Cook's Country magazine, Cook's Illustrated magazine, our cookbook team or photo team. They will work daily alongside our test cooks and editors to perform recipe or product research,
mise en place, cooking tests, tastings, equipment reviews and other related projects. Interns support our operations staff with grocery check in and distribution, inventory, and kitchen organization. They assist us with set up, breakdown and prep for special events. Interns have the opportunity to complete a research project halfway through to exhibit what they've learned as an intern.
This position is comparable to a line cook job at a restaurant: ultimately, candidates must have knife skills, working knowledge of cooking techniques, ability to read and follow a recipe, strong sense of product identification, meticulous attention to detail and a willingness to learn from a staff of highly trained cooks who uphold our standards and methodologies. Candidates must be analytical, communicative, flexible, efficient and punctual. They should be able to work independently, but also on a team while maintaining a creative mindset.
You must have:
-An accredited culinary degree
-3 years culinary/pastry experience preferably through other internships, jobs or stages.
-Research experience in a science capacity is preferred.
Our kitchen internship program is paid $8/hr and is 3 months duration. Internship dates are posted as they are available. We do not accommodate individual schedules.
We are currently hiring for our spring internship: February
9th - May
1st, 2015.
