Arizmendi Bakery
An Exciting and Rewarding Workplace: Everyone is hired with the intention of them becoming owner-operators of the business. Folks are eligible to be voted in as owners after a six-month training period. All worker-owners have an equal vote in our democratic decision-making and an equal share in any profits. All staff work baking shifts as well as participate in business management. Our business is from our association of bakeries (including
Arizmendi in Oakland, San Francisco, Emeryville, San Rafael, and the Cheese Board in Berkeley).
Qualifications for worker-owners: Applicants should love working with food, enjoy physically demanding work, also maintaining a clean and sanitary environment, have enthusiasm for cooperating as a group, be motivated to work hard, and be willing to take the initiative and responsibility for co-managing their business. Baking and restaurant experience is valued but not necessary. Business or cooperative experience is also a plus.
Compensation and Buying into the Business: Initial pay is $15.50/hour and benefits include medical insurance and dental after three months. Future pay and share of profits depends on the performance of the business. If voted in after the six-month candidacy period, an individual can buy into the business (everyone is expected to become an owner or move on as we keep no one on as permanent employees/non-owners). The total buy-in is $5,000; $500 of that is required in cash and the rest can be done through payroll deductions.
