Summary: The Kitchen Manager serves as a Customer Service Ambassador by insuring that the food we serve always meets or exceeds our standards of excellence at all times. The Kitchen Manager will take responsibility for setting the expectation for all kitchen team members to work as a team to maximize our productivity. The Kitchen Manager is the example of our standards at all times, whether it is cleanliness, organization, or food quality. The Kitchen Manager must be able to work effectively with limited supervision and demonstrate leadership in order to motivate others.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Support Allied Churches vision creating and delivering impactful service plans for participants that focus on achieving outcomes in the areas of housing, education, employment, mental health wellness, relationships, and overall well-being.
- Collaborate with on-site / local resources to help participants address / overcome barriers
- Effectively and proactively communicate participant and/or program progress and concerns
- Support and collaborate with local farmers
- Food insecurity is a major issue in the county, the goal of community kitchen and food pantry is to provide meal provisions so no one needing help will have to remain hungry.
- Ensure that the sustenance given is of high nutrient value and the needs of persons who have food sensitivities and chronic health issues (i.e. gluten, dairy, peanut, diabetes, etc.) are also provided for.
Focus area duties and responsibilities – Kitchen Manager / Chef:
- Observes and promotes safe work practices and procedures;
- Directs the preparation of food according to standardized recipes and established food preparation procedures;
- Plans food production for the following day by directing the preparation of required food items;
- Plans and directs an acceptable placement of steam table pans on the cafeteria line prior to the start time;
- Assesses the appropriate quantity of food to order, prepare and serve according to projected meal count;
- Secures food and supplies according to established guidelines and requirements;
- Receives and verifies all deliveries and refuses unsatisfactory products or services;
- Secures substitutes for food services advocates and him/herself in the event this is necessary;
- Provides instruction, directs and organizes the performance responsibilities of other food service advocates, volunteers, and shelter guests who assist in the kitchen;
- Ensures the proper storage of food and supplies;
- Directs, supervises and evaluates all kitchen cleaning functions;
- Reports any personal injuries and/or accidents to the proper authority;
- Reports equipment failure according to established procedures;
- Supervises food service functions to insure that food is served in a safe and sanitary environment;
- Accurately completes and submits all required daily, weekly and monthly food service reports;
- Attends in-service training to improve skills and knowledge of job expertise;
- Performs job activities in a timely and efficient manner;
- Promotes nutrition awareness through innovative activities which help staff to understand the relationship of proper nutrition and healthy body and mind;
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect staff, guests, equipment, materials, and facilities;
- Plans and implements banquet and catering functions when requested;
- Adheres to uniform and personal hygiene requirements;
- Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities;
- Plans periodic in-service with food service workers to update safety procedures and other related job information.
Other duties and responsibilities:
- To provide a range of sensitive and appropriate services to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness;
- Assumes responsibility for professional growth and keeps skills up-to-date;
- Participate in trainings and meetings, demonstrating a positive and motivating "team approach" when interacting with team members and actively participate in ongoing development and strength building of the Allied Churches Team;
- Perform other duties as may be assigned by Executive Director or Program Director.
Qualification requirements: Education And/Or Experience: Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) or related field; or two to three (2-3) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Commercial kitchen management experience. Food Handler certification (ServeSafe).
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid North Carolina Driver’s License, ability to pass a background check.
Other Skills and Abilities: This individual must be committed to homeless issues, be creative, self-motivated, and possess the ability to work independently. Excellent crisis intervention and conflict resolution skills. Must have the ability to take direction from others and work well in a team setting. Must have excellent personal and professional boundaries. Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications. Ability to remain flexible, work under pressure and deadlines, and deal with interruptions in the workplace. Ability to work evenings and some weekends. The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Required to stand and walk regularly, occasionally sit, lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- The ability to withstand temperature variances common to food service facilities is required.
Position is a grant funded position. In addition to other specified conditions of employment, the applicant understands that no guarantee of continued employment, beyond the availability of current funds, is expressed or implied by Allied Churches.
Hours per week: 40+ hrs
Benefits: medical, life, disability, PTO (paid time off)Starting Salary: $33,000-$35,000 / yr
