Organization Summary: The mission of the Massachusetts Avenue Project (MAP) is to nurture the growth of a diverse and equitable community food system to promote local economic opportunities, access to affordable nutritious food and social change education. MAP’s Growing Green Program is a year-round youth development initiative that involves youth in solving Buffalo’s challenges related to nutrition and healthy food access. The program trains urban youth in urban agriculture, food systems issues, microenterprise development and leadership.
Position Summary: The Green House & Aquaponics Manager will support MAP’s urban farm operations and be responsible for the supervision and management of crop and livestock production in MAP’s aquaponics greenhouse systems, including:
- Work closely with Farm Manager and Markets Director on annual crop plan, crop schedule and farm revenue goals
- Assist with farm work and occasional Mobile Market activities as directed by Farm Manager
- Oversee farm repairs and maintenance of equipment as needed
- Plan and implement greenhouse operations, including transplanting, ordering supplies, watering, etc. Assist with delivering/ picking up supplies and equipment
- Monitor and maintain daily operations of aquaponics systems including hatchery and main tanks
- Monitor and and maintain production records tracking system components including but not limited to ph, ammonia, nitrates, dissolved oxygen, bacteria level, temperature, feed amounts, growth rates, and population.
- Set up systems for efficient harvesting of fish for market; work with Markets Director to coordinate harvest schedule
- Provide scheduled aquaponics/greenhouse training to other staff, youth and community members
- Supervise aquaponic/greenhouse intern as needed
- Ensure greenhouse/aquaponics activities follow GAP and good safety standards
- Regularly review aquaponics business plan, and revise as needed
Required Qualifications:
Working knowledge and at least one year experience with aquaponic vegetable production
Farming experience including working knowledge of plant and soil health
Building, construction and/or maintenance experience or mechanically inclined
Working knowledge of retail and business processes, including point of sale transactions and familiarity with budgets, sales, marketing, and customer relations
Knowledge of GAP standards and food safety requirements
Excellent organizational skills including attention to detail and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Ability to supervise and train others and interest in working with teens
Flexible schedule; ability to work some evenings and weekends
Clean drivers license
This position is year round, averaging 20 hrs week; salary commensurate with experience
