  • Date Posted July 19, 2016
  • Location Webatuck, NY
  • Category Agriculture / Nonprofit
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description Food and social justice, worker-owned farm cooperative specializing in medicinal herb, mushroom and vegetable production, and value-added products Job description White Pine Community Farm in Webatuck (Wingdale), New York, seeks a candidate with at least one year farm experience to join our farming cooperative. You would participate in herb, vegetable and mushroom production and wild-crafting; marketing; and land-infrastructure work. Our goal is to grow quality produce for low-income communities and those in need. Our not-for-profit A Farm for All! owns 46 acres including a 6-BR farmhouse and a full-size 1820s barn. Three (3) acres are sandy-loam, vegetable-growing soil; much of the remainder is a wooded hillside by a Berkshires ridgeline. Lease possibilities exist on neighboring land.

You would work with two current cooperative members as we continue to set up our farming programs. We have established markets for our produce in the South Bronx, Dutchess and Westchester, N.Y. We've recently gotten our mushroom operation underway with help from a Cornell grant. We have two greenhouses. We're continuing to create our overall plan for the land, for which we also receive assistance from Green Worker Cooperatives based in the Bronx.

You would join us as soon as possible for a minimum work commitment through October. Prospective cooperative members undergo a two-year trial.

We host classes with Twin Star Herbal Education, based in nearby New Milford, CT. Further educational opportunities exist through our work.

Another of our collaborators through whom we have distributed produce is Victory Bus Rides, which brings families to visit their loved ones in prison.

We seek individuals who are enthusiastic about our vision and care about food justice. We are building a more collective farm, and we are excited to find farmers who have experience in cooperatively run organizations and/or are willing to work towards that goal.

We offer room and board; and motor vehicle access; and further compensation based on your experience and income of the cooperative. Work schedule negotiable. You would live in community with a family including a mother and two children; as well as additional farmers and non-farmers.

We're located 3 miles from Metro-North Railroad to New York City and just a half-mile from the Tenmile River and the Appalachian Trail. Compensation this position is : contract Application instructions
