The Sweet Praxis is a soon-to-be-open bakery and café located in the Hanover Square neighborhood of Downtown Syracuse, NY.  We provide our community with a variety of sweet and savory baked goods created with the highest quality local, seasonal and organic ingredients whenever possible and we welcome guests with a variety of dietary preferences including gluten free and vegan.  We provide customers with a full line of retail bakery products, and aim to introduce breakfast and lunch items as well as increase our wholesale and private catering orders. Our bakery aims to minimize our waste stream and rely heavily on compostable and recyclable packaging. 

Job description

We are looking to hire a motivated, reliable bake-minded person that enjoys team collaboration and is passionate about good food.  Ideal candidates should be willing to take direction, offer up ideas, and be eager to assist in all aspects of food prep and bakery production.  The assistant baker(s) will gradually assume responsibility for all components of bakery production.  Experience working in a commercial kitchen is a plus, but not necessary. Flexibility is a must as shifts vary from 6 a.m. – 8 p.m.  This position is year-round, 20-35 hours per week.  Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with the applicant’s previous experience.  The scope and demands of the position will evolve over time offering much opportunity to grow.

 

Qualifications:

  • Must be able to work in a small, team-oriented environment
  • Detail oriented
  • Must have excellent organization and communication skills
  • Some baking or cooking experience (culinary school not necessary, but a plus)
  • Must be punctual- timeliness is very important
  • Self-motivation and self-accountability
  • A passion for good food
  • Positivity and a sense of humor!

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • A devotion to cleanliness and organization
  • Assisting with daily bread, pastry and lunch production
  • Lifting heavy things (up to 50 lbs)
  • Long hours on feet
  • Flexible schedule with availability to work weekends and some late nights
