Farm School NYC is a collaborative project created by individuals and organizations involved in NYC’s greening, botanical and agriculture work. Our mission is to train NYC residents in urban agriculture, in order to build self-reliant communities and inspire positive local action around food access and social, economic, and racial justice issues. Farm School NYC offers urban agriculture training through a two-year certificate program, an accelerated certificate program,  as well as a wide range of individual courses. Our courses are taught by experts in the field and focus on a wide range of topics from social justice issues, to urban planting techniques, to grassroots community organizing. Through engaging, place-based education, Farm School classes cultivate future leaders in NYC's food justice movement.

Job description

Are you a highly organized person who thrives on ensuring that every stakeholder of a project is informed, every detail is coordinated? Are you digitally savvy when it comes to organizing projects remotely and communicating effectively? Are you interested in community education, food justice and/or urban agriculture work? If so, we’d love to hear from you!

Farm School NYC is seeking an enthusiastic Program Associate who will be responsible for assisting with all aspects of operations and administration of the School.  The Program Associate will report directly to Farm School NYC’s Director, who reports to the Farm School NYC Executive Board and who works closely with volunteer committees, faculty, community partners and host sites.


Summary of Responsibilities:

Operations

  • Coordinate student registration process and notify students of upcoming course details;
  • Track and process student application data and maintain student records;
  • Develop and maintain student database;
  • ssess program and course effectiveness, with guidance from director and evaluator,
  • Other administrative and operational tasks as needed

Outreach and Communication

  • Respond to information requests from prospective Farm School NYC students or interested partners;
  • Communicate with Farm School NYC applicants regarding their application status;
  • Conduct student outreach and build relationships with partners;

Website and Social Media Management

  • Update Farm School NYC websites and materials;
  • Create and maintain content calendar for our social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram,Twitter, etc)

Student, Faculty and Partnership Support

  • Coordinate office volunteers and interns;
  • Organize and facilitate student and committee meetings;
  • Manage apprenticeship program;
  • Staff student selection, Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training (CRAFT) and apprenticeship committees;
  • Support local beginning farmers with networking & education opportunities;


Required Skills:

  • At least 2 years of professional project or program administration
  • Highly detail oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office products and have the ability and willingness to learn to use other media platforms
  • Familiarity with Google apps, website content management like Squarespace, and email platforms like Constant Contact a BIG plus
  • Strong  interpersonal and communication skills (written and phone)
  • Diligent in every effort; Ability to multitask while working both independently and with a team
  • Flexibility and ability to react to change productively
  • Ability to maintain high-quality work while meeting tight deadlines
  • Optimistic and positive attitude; Self motivated.
  • Interest in education and/or urban farming, prior experience not required;
  • Some weekend work (Saturdays) and evenings (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) required;
  • Willingness and ability to work remotely preferred.


Compensation and Benefits

This is a temp-to-perm full time opportunity. For the remainder of 2016, the position will pay $16.50 per hour with no benefits, however beginning in 2017, the position will transition to a full-time salaried position including benefits.  The annual salary, once in effect in 2017, will be $30,000 plus health insurance, flexible holidays, vacation, and sick leave benefits.
