ABOUT
Future Chefs prepares urban youth for quality early employment and post secondary educational opportunities in the culinary field where the prospects for advancement are consistently high. Founded in 2008, the program has partnered with high school culinary arts programs in the Greater Boston Area to recruit youth interested in culinary careers. In 2012 the program will expand into a new teaching kitchen and classroom at the intersection of Lower Roxbury and the South End. A new formal mentoring component will establish guidelines and mechanisms for youth to connect with adult professionals in the field who receive adequate training, supervision and support to build safe, effective and appropriate mentoring relationships with older teens and young adults.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Future Chefs Mentoring Project will create a formal program component that 1) provides extended mentoring and coaching to support the school to work/career transition during high school and through early work and post secondary training; 2) guides the recruitment, training and supervision of adult professionals (culinary and other) as mentors; 3) describes the method and impact to participants, families, funders and community partners 4) clearly connects expected outcomes to mentoring. Our goal is to increase older youths’ access to supportive relationships with adult professionals in the field during the school to career/work transition and to provide guidance and support to ensure that these relationships are effective and appropriate.
ESSSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Be able to complete a minimum 900 hours of service to complete host site project

Monthly reporting to Mass Mentoring Partnership

Must be able to work collaboratively and within groups in order to complete group projects to benefit the field of mentoring

Must be able to attend all corps-wide trainings and events to cultivate future non-profit leaders, including a week-long orientation, bi-monthly corps meetings, a mid-year retreat and two service-week sessions

Maintain a service Portfolio

Must be able to effectively manage time and meet competing demands.

Complete all professional development requirements as part of member contract.
QUALIFICATIONS

BA/BS strongly preferred
-
Experience with and/or commitment to youth development
-
Interest in non profit organizations and their development
-
Excellent organization, time management and communication skills

Proven leadership and project management abilities

A passion for national and community service

The desire be part of a diverse learning community

Flexibility and a good sense of humor

Positive, can do attitude

US Citizen or Permanent US Resident

Previous mentor/mentee experience

Respect for the dignity of all work and willingness to consider multiple points of view

Experience in the food service industry a plus
