Job description
About the role: You will assist the day-to-day operation of building Dig Inn’s farm and sustain it with our team through May - November in Chester, NY. As the Dig Inn farm will model our definition of sustainability and be a living lab for growing for food, it’s also a place to train farmers and chefs.
Apprentices will have the opportunity to work on a first-year farm as it implements and sets up best practices in an organic farming system. We will grow a mix of vegetables across two acres with a mix of sustainable use of plasticulture and dense BCS-tractor based open cultivation. You will take part in all facets of the farm, from bed preparation to irrigation management, and shipping our harvests. Representing the Dig Inn brand while also administering tasks to support the efforts of a new farm is vital for the growth of you and our vegetables.
About the team: Our farm-team is based in the Hudson Valley at Dig Inn’s farm. Growing produce for our restaurants to reduce transit emissions, minimize food waste, and provide our chefs with vegetables fresh from the farm is the core of what we do. You will report to our Farm Manager with the sustainability team, who is committed to impacting the future of food and building a better food system.
You will:

Work with the farm manager in all aspects of the farming operation, including, but not limited to, seeding, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, delivering

Operate small machinery and maintain vehicle maintenance – mowers, weed whackers, BCS tractors, vehicle oil changes, etc

Take part in the Hudson Valley C.R.A.F.T. program, a collaborative training program where apprentices will travel to other farms to learn about their farming systems and techniques

Prepare for and assist with any special events with the Dig Inn team

Manage all farm maintenance duties as they arise
You have:

A love for farming (experience helpful but not required) and learning more about organic practices in our farming system

The ability to lift at least 50 pounds at a time

The strength to work outside in all conditions (heat, rain, cold, snow, etc)

A valid driver's license to operate a small company van

Keen observation skills

No fear in speaking up about what you see

Strong communication to collaborate with a team and innate discipline to work independently through your projects

Compensation: $12/hour, generally 7AM to 5PM, Monday to Friday with occasional weekends. Fresh vegetables from the farm, free meals at our Dig Inn locations!

Compensation
