GFJ INSTAGRAM CHALLENGE
The warm weather has us outdoors, itching to document signs of life all over. Sometimes this can happen in the most unlikely (read: URBAN) locations. We challenge you to keep your eyes open for evidence of urban growth and tag your photos with #GFJurbanspring. Don't limit yourself to rooftop farms or backyard chickens - you might find flowers coming up in the cracks of the sidewalk, spy herbs on a windowsill, or discover your nearest community garden.
The entry with the most likes at 8 AM on Tuesday, May 13th wins 2 tickets to the Hort and W. Atlee Burpee Co. Urban Agriculture Conference on May 29th / 30th in NYC.
Psst: tag your photo with the official conference hashtag #uac2014 for maximum coverage.

WEB DEVELOPMENTS

In light of our recent stance on unpaid internships, we've honed our search refinement tools. Check them out in the left sidebar of the Find a Job page.

NICE THINGS PEOPLE SAY
Your site does such a good job of capturing the current energy and interest around food and food justice issues.

Last week, we talked about employee accountability. In case you forgot, our main point was that we understand how the job search process (and even the job having process, for that matter) can leave you feeling like all forces are against you. There are times when things don't work out as planned, when doors are being shut in your face, and when hurdles seem insurmountable. We recognize that these experiences can put any rational person on the defensive.
But, of course, we want to turn the tables. We want to empower every person to take a bit more control and exercise more creativity in the way that he or she spends their time and energy.
So this week, we're hoping to give you some chances to turn your luck (and work) around. Here are a few ways 'to win'.
OPPORTUNITY #1 JOIN US AT THE FOOD BOOK FAIR
This one's pretty straightforward. We thought we'd put the low hanging fruit right up front.
We have purchased 50 tickets to the Foodieodicals event on Saturday April 26th, 12 PM - 4 PM.
The first 50 people that RSVP get to go to the event free of charge.
WHY?
Every time we personally meet GFJ users, we're floored with how creative, engaging, personable, and friendly they are. We want more of you to meet each other. Plus, we're pretty sure most of you would be interested in the event, given that 20 incredible food publication makers will be there. If you're interested in food writing / publishing / photography it's a great place to connect with places that might one day employ you.
HOW
RSVP to us by Thursday April 24th at noon. The first 50 responders will get a free ticket.
THE CATCH
We are operating in good faith. Please only RSVP if you intend to go to the event. Also, we hope that you will make the most of the opportunity, and befriend at least one other GFJ user (we are crafting a way to ensure that you can identify your cohorts).
OPPORTUNITY #2 WIN TICKETS TO THE URBAN AGRICULTURE CONFERENCE
This one requires a little bit more initiative. But we hope that you'll jump at the opportunity to flex your creative muscles and open your eyes.
See the left sidebar for our latest GFJ Instagram Challenge. The winner gets 2 tickets to an incredible event (May 29th & 30th) where you can learn new things pertaining to your interest in urban agriculture, meet inspiring individuals doing work that you believe in, and save some money that you can devote to eating and/or growing good food.
OPPORTUNITY #3 WIN TICKETS TO EDIBLE INSTITUTE 2014
Yes, your very own pair of two-day tickets to the Edible Institute held in NYC on May 10th & 11th, 2014. There are already a slew of important and thought-provoking topics on the agenda for the weekend, and we're giving you a chance to practice thinking critically about one of them: in five sentences or less, send us the most important question we should be asking about unpaid labor in the USA, and one possible answer/solution. Get creative, and don't be afraid to think beyond the realm of (what seems like) possibility. Entries are due in our inbox by 9am EST on Friday May 2nd. We'll choose a winner and publish their entry in the May 6th newsletter. ENTER FOR EDIBLE
OPPORTUNITY #4 WIN TICKETS TO THE WORLD DOMINATION SUMMIT
Last, but most certainly not least . . .
Okay, we can't really take credit for this one, but it is AWESOME. We've got to hand it to Rob from the Hundred Dollar Club - he's turned a hurdle into a catapult. He had pre-purchased a ticket to the World Domination Summit this July and later realized that his second-born will be making his or her debut appearance during the scheduled conference dates. Rather than wallow in the lost funds, he turned it into a cost effective (and just plain ol' effective) marketing campaign. He's likely accrued hundreds of thousands of hits on his website with his cleverly viral WDS Ticket Giveaway.
You've got 2 more days to enter, and nothing to lose by doing so. It's definitely worth two minutes of your time.

We hope these opportunities give you a little bit of inspiration. As our Words of Wisdom post this week (ahem, in the left sidebar - you should be getting used to this by now) states: It Takes a Community to Do It Yourself. And we are so happy to be a part of this GFJ community.
Cheers,
Taylor & Dorothy
