Launched in May 2018, Foodshed Capital is a Virginia-based nonprofit loan fund, farm business accelerator, and Community Development Financial Institution operating around the country. Our mission is to help regenerative farmers overcome the financial barriers that hinder their success so they can achieve enduring outcomes for communities and climate. We provide two primary services:
1) Capital: Affordable, flexible farm financing with no fees or credit scores, including 0% interest for many low-income operations.
2) Business Support: Zero-cost, high-touch services to help farmers understand their finances, plan for growth, successfully apply for financing, and sustainably manage debt.

ABOUT THE ROLE
Foodshed Capital is looking for someone to help us expand our support services for small- and mid-scale regenerative farms and food businesses that need more organized financials and stronger financial literacy. They’ll bring solid professional bookkeeping experience, a curious and analytical mindset, and a knack for making sense of financial data—helping establish sustainable bookkeeping practices while translating numbers into clear, actionable insights for business owners. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable working independently or collaboratively, whether digging into spreadsheets, working directly with farmers, or presenting to a group. This role is a great fit for someone who’s excited to use their financial skills for purpose-driven work and is ready to step beyond the boundaries of traditional bookkeeping to support a small, collaborative team and a big mission.

This position will be a client-facing role responsible for three main areas of business support services:
1) Comprehensive Bookkeeping Services: Bookkeeping services in Quickbooks Online and financial literacy support for individual farming operations, aiming for 15 clients in 2026.
2) Lending Readiness Services: Audit of financials submitted by loan applicants to ensure reports are sufficient for underwriting. This includes evaluating for bookkeeping errors such as negative bank account balances, and working with applicants to generate necessary financial reports and resolve bookkeeping errors prior to underwriting. This does not include any assessment of profitability or business strategy.
3) Public Financial Literacy Workshops: Free, public-facing, virtual programming around bookkeeping/accounting and topics that support overall business success. Workshop content will be planned in collaboration with other programming staff, with this individual taking the lead on public facilitation. (Not responsible for marketing the workshops.)
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide comprehensive bookkeeping services, including set up, categorization, reconciliation, and reporting, for multiple client accounts
- Collaborate regularly with the lending team to evaluate loan applicant financials
- Directly advise farm business owners with needs related to QuickBooks and bookkeeping
- Create and facilitate public-facing financial literacy workshops (primarily virtual, although some in-person work may be required) in collaboration with other staff
- Collaborate with the Data & Systems Manager to accurately track hours spent and types of business support provided.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Commitment to Foodshed Capital’s mission
- Three to five years professional bookkeeping experience and familiarity with the financial circumstances of small and/or early-stage businesses
- Certified Public Bookkeeper (CPB) certification ideal
- Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, and/or the lived experience to build trusted partnerships
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field, such as business, accounting, finance, or similar
- Knowledge in accounting and tax preparation a plus
- Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills, with ability to tailor content to diverse audiences
- Excellent time management skills, with ability to effectively complete deliverables and share relevant updates with other remote staff
- Ability to integrate into existing virtual workflows, using shared platforms like Slack, Asana, and other project management tools to communicate progress
- Flexibility to accommodate variable work hours, including periodic domestic travel to in-person team strategy meetings.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Annual salary is based on experience and ability, within the range of $65,000 - $72,000. This role offers opportunities for professional growth as our client base and capacity expand.
