Wild Mountain Seeds is heavily focused on research and seed breeding, creating vegetable seed that is vigorous, adaptable and unique. We grow the highest quality produce and seed using minimal tillage and permaculture techniques in our alpine environment. Our goal is to create a hard working, supportive and FUN work environment on the farm.
Job description
The Crew Foreman is an introductory supervisory position responsible for directing daily field operations and routine farm tasks. The Crew Foreman coordinates with the Production Manager to develop the farm’s daily plan and priorities and is responsible for implementing the day’s work list by participating in field work while directly supervising others in the field. The Production Manager is responsible for developing the season’s production plan, and will mentor and train the Crew Foreman on weekly task planning, our standards, and the technical aspects of our farm production.
The Crew Foreman will ensure that all tasks are completed correctly, efficiently, and safely while maintaining a positive work environment for crew members. Primarily, the Crew Foreman will be supervising seasonal crew members and volunteers, but occasionally other leadership staff on the farm will join field tasks. The Crew Foreman is responsible for communicating updated standards and instructions to all those working on tasks they are leading.
The Crew Foreman must have consistent attention to detail, strong organizational skills while remaining flexible and adaptable to changing situations. An ideal candidate has excellent communication skills and is comfortable holding a group accountable to efficiency and quality standards. This position is a key contributor to both the profitability and positivity of the farm season.
Ideal candidates for this position will be motivated to participate in hands-on daily field work alongside new and learning farmers, and will both lead by example in pace-setting and quality of work while also providing instruction, encouragement, and constructive feedback to crew members.
This position is a great opportunity for someone with 1+ years of hands-on, production-level vegetable farming experience ready for a next step that will prepare them for farm management.
Responsibilities:
Field Leadership:

- Provide direction and supervision of routine field tasks including planting, weeding, trellising, pruning, harvest, wash and pack of vegetables and flowers.
- Provide clear instructions and expectations by demonstrating technique, showing examples of quality standards and setting pacing.
- Monitor work of the crew, providing feedback and encouragement.
- Take responsibility for group work performance and work outcomes of crews and tasks under their direction.
- Provide immediate and specific feedback on task performance.
- Model and demonstrate excellent communication skills and respect for all others, especially under stressful conditions.
- Inform production manager and farm director of crop progress and crew performance.
- Assist in leading team meetings, crew culture initiatives, and performance evaluations
Task Organization and Planning

- Work closely with the Production Manager to organize work priorities and weekly workflow for the team.
- Seek instruction and clarification of standards from the Production Manager.
- Preemptively prepare and facilitate efficient transitions of the crew between tasks
- Track task timing and develop accurate time estimates for routine tasks.
Recordkeeping:

- Ensure complete planting, task, and harvest records.
Farm Production:
-
- Bed Preparation, direct seeding and transplanting.
- Maintain planted beds: irrigation, weeding, trellising, thinning, pruning.
- Field observations: plant growth, pests and disease, moisture and other crop needs.
- Harvest, wash and pack of produce.
- Ensure quality, food safety and freshness standards.
- Other tasks as assigned by the Production Manager and Ranch Manager.
Requirements:
- At least one season of farming experience on a production vegetable farm, and desire to continue to pursue an agricultural career.
- Ability to swiftly pick up new concepts and techniques and then teach them to others.
- Strong communication skills, positive attitude, and a desire to set the daily tone for the crew.
- Detail-oriented, dependable, and punctual.
- Comfortable giving and receiving direction and constructive criticism.
- Demonstrative team leadership qualities.
- Adheres to quality assurance and quality-control.
- Able to work independently; self-directed.
- <meta charset="UTF-8" />Valid Driver licence required to fulfill job duties such as delivering produce or working the farmers market using company vehicles
- Ability to lift 50 lbs, stand, kneel and squat for prolonged timeframes
- Work in changing weather conditions from snow/rain to dry and hot.
- A foundational understanding of food production systems, having experience with seasonality, plant propagation and seedling care, plant life cycles, scouting for pests and diseases, irrigation and moisture observations, harvest and post-harvest handling, farmers markets, etc.
- Non-tobacco users (we breed tomatoes).
Preferred Qualifications:
● Tractor and Implement experience a plus
● Experience with seed breeding/saving work
Work Schedule:
This position is seasonal, 7 months starting April 1st through October 31st.
Standard work week: Monday- Friday, and at least one Saturday per month.

Compensation
this position is: hourly, varies DOE, $23.00 - $25.00
