Company description
Rooted Family Farm is a small family farm in Newfields, NH focused on the conservation of resources for improved efficiency to produce healthy food for our community.
We operate as an organic operation focused on sustainable and efficient systems. We grow a diverse range of crops year round, utilizing a 30x96 high tunnel with automated irrigation for crops like strawberries, tomatoes, greens, peas, carrots, and herbs, alongside a 4,000-square-foot field dedicated to squash and pumpkins. We also manage a flock of 30 egg-laying chickens. We have extensive wildflower pollinator habitat, composting operations, and other natural resource conservation practices implemented as well
The farm works closely with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service as an active conservation partner to implement numerous environmental stewardship and energy conservation practices. Everyone is part of the farm, and everyone plays a role in conservation. Working with our farm gives employees and customers alike direct exposure to these ongoing conservation practices and improvements, which include initiatives to improve soil health, reduce irrigation water usage, optimize our composting systems, lower overall energy consumption, and implement biological controls for pest management.
Internship description
We are seeking a motivated person to dedicate 10–20 hours per week to manage our farm systems starting mid-late May through September/October. Responsibilities will include holistic plant care (weeding, pruning, organic fertilizing), irrigation management, poultry care, and crop harvesting and packaging. We offer flexible scheduling.
Importantly, we are not just looking for a farmhand. Drawing on years of personal experience as an Agricultural Engineering professor at UNH, we are approaching this role as an educator. Dr. Todd Guerdat is the farm designer and owner and will provide comprehensive oversight, training, and mentorship to help the farm manager truly understand the mechanics, engineering, conservation strategies, and business of small-scale sustainable agriculture.
Ideal Employee Profiles
This opportunity is uniquely suited to two types of individuals, and we are highly adaptable to either background:
Agriculture / Sustainability: A motivated person with foundational plant science or environmental knowledge who wants to apply their education and experience in a real-world setting, gaining hands-on experience with high-tunnel automation, organic crop management, and USDA NRCS conservation practices.
Business / Entrepreneurship: A motivated individual who is interested in the business and economics of local, sustainable food systems. We are fully prepared to teach the agricultural skills required, provided the individual brings a strong operational focus to maximize the farm's efficiency and profitability.
Compensation and Profit-Sharing
Because we are a small operation, the base pay for this position is capped at $15 per hour. However, to foster a true sense of ownership and entrepreneurial spirit, we an offering a profit-sharing incentive. If the farm is managed efficiently under Dr. Guerdat’s guidance, the proceeds will net a profit, a percentage of which will be shared directly with the farm manager at the end of the season. This structure guarantees base compensation while rewarding dedication, problem-solving, and hard work.
Compensation
this position is: hourly, $15-20/hr
