Happy Holidays!
We hate to say goodbye, even temporarily, but the gastrognomes will be on hiatus for the week of December 27th. Much as we wish we could say that we're going into hibernation, we'll actually be traveling in opposite directions to witness the holiday seasons (and flavors) in Ecuador and in Copenhagen.
Speaking of travel, we've recently heard from a lot of our neighbors across the country, and globe, in Chicago, Miami, California, Canada and the UK. Your pleas for more good food jobs around the world are not going unheard, and we promise to continue working to increase awareness of the good food businesses that are making a difference.
Whether you're traveling somewhere old or new this holiday, or staying cozy at home, take a moment to send us your best recommendations for good food companies and organizations that you'd like to see on the site. We'll make it our New Years resolution to reach out to each and every one of them in 2011.
Editor's Note: If you're extra eager to help, check out our Good Food Jobs post for Outreach Intern.
And if you're a job seeker, don't forget to keep checking the site over the holidays. Just because we're on vacation doesn't mean we aren't approving job posts as fast as they come in! Many companies still need help around the New Year, and keeping your eyes and ears alert (in between handfuls of holiday cookie dough) gives you the potential to get there first.
Wishing you a delightful and delicious end to 2010!

ASK THE GASTRO.GNOMES
Since the food industry is so casual, I always have a dilemma of what to wear on an interview. I always dress up in a skirt/dress but I don't want to look out of place either. Any suggestions?
We would say that it depends on the type of place with which you are interviewing. So, for example, if you're applying for a job with a well-known restaurant group, you might want to stick to something more formal like a suit. But in most other environments you can probably get by with less formal attire, such as tailored jeans and a tasteful wrinkle-free top. The main thing is to be neat and clean (i.e. no holes, stains, profane t-shirt messages, etc.) and I think that can come across successfully with many different wardrobe options.
Editor's Note: The job seeker that asked this question just got offered (and took) the job for which she was interviewing! Congratulations, Nicole.

Stacey Slate
Retail & Community Outreach Manager
Steve's Craft Ice Cream
What we love most about working in food is the fact that there is not just one way to go about it. This can be a blessing and a curse. It can be paralyzing or endlessly enlightening, depending on what you make of it. But Stacey shows us the brighter side. We first crossed paths with her when she was a freelance writer, in search of some facts for a piece on stinky cheese. Then we ran into her up at Stone Barns where she helped craft the F.A.R.M.S. training manual. And now, we can count her as one of our clients, since she recently posted a job through her new gig at Steve’s Craft Ice Cream. It may not have been an obvious career trajectory, but it’s one that helped her to amass contacts, experience, and insight about what she wants from her good food job . . . read more here.
EDITOR'S NOTE: If you're already jealous of Stacey's gig, then get your scooping arm ready. Steve's is currently hiring a barista and an ice cream scooper.
