Food Poverty Eliminator Transition Lab

  • Date Posted September 30, 2013
  • Location Montrose, CO
  • Category Agriculture / Education
  • Job Type Internship/Apprentice
Job Description We are looking for somebody to help us scale up a model that will affordably provide organic produce to those living in both poverty and a food desert. This model is simple and successful and here's how it works:

We have a school called Transition Lab that teaches people how to build a resilient future. Part of this is obviously providing food to our community. Our students work on local organic farms and get food shares in exchange for 4 hours of labor each week. The farmers get needed labor and pay for it with surplus food, not cash- while we get great food and education. It's a win-win and we've proved it economically viable and accessible.

With that said, many of the kids in our community are on free or reduced lunch due to poverty. This means that most only eat when they are at school, and hardly any have access to fresh organic produce. To address this, we've already established relationships with the farmers to trade their surplus produce with folks who are dependent on the food pantry IF they are willing to do a work trade. We've managed to get some kids out to the farm to work for meals. The trick is it takes a lot of time and personal contact to really get this going.

That's where you would come in- as a student and co-creator at Transition Lab. And this is what you really need to know: Transition Lab is emerging as a global leader in resilience education and cultivating social entrepreneurs. This month we won MIT's CoLab Contest for the best "Local Solution". Out of 40 entries worldwide, Transition Lab's model won both the judge's and popular award for being the most accessible, viable, and replicable approach for reducing CO2 emissions and building a resilient future.

In 2014, our program is only accepting 7 students because we are going to focus specifically on setting up these kinds of relationships and social business models- with one of them being a food accessibility project. Instead of paying full tuition, there are folks who have offered partial scholarships a student who would work on this project. You'd help us pioneer something radical, and then be in a position to help lead a nation-wide replication effort the following year. There's ton's of perks to working with Transition Lab as well, like getting zero-dollar rent, doing what you love, and building a resilient future. So, if you are looking to pioneer a radical and successful way to combat food poverty in America, plus become a co-creator at Transition Lab, AND live in beautiful Western Colorado, give us a shout.
