Greenmarket is a program of GrowNYC (http://www.grownyc.org).  Greenmarket's mission is to promote regional agriculture and ensure a continuing supply of fresh local produce for New Yorkers. Greenmarket supports farmers and preserves farmland for the future by providing regional, small family farmers with opportunities to sell their fruits, vegetables and other farm products to New Yorkers. 

In 2011 Greenmarket developed FARMroots, a farmer-friendly technical resource center, to provide business development services that help farmers thrive and ensure long-term farm viability.  FARMroots works to expand the business capacity, professional acumen, and long-term planning capabilities of aspiring and established Greenmarket producers to ensure competitive and sustainable small farm businesses.

FARMroots Business Planning Specialist Position
Reporting to the FARMroots Director and Greenmarket Director, the FARMroots Business Planning Specialist will be responsible for providing high quality and efficient farm business planning services to Greenmarket producers. The position requires an understanding of core business concepts as they relate to the agricultural industry in the Northeast. This position is full time.  

FARMroots Business Planning Specialist Responsibilities

• Provide and/or coordinate high-quality farm-based businesses development services with a specific focus on land transition and farm succession
• Enroll farmer participants in FARMroots business planning services
• Collect and analyze business planning data including financial reports and marketing data to measure farm performance and plan and implement business improvements
• Maintain network of consultants, recruit new consultants as needed and track performance
• Maintain and create partnerships with outside organizations to effectively connect farmers with resources
• Participate in technical service provider networks and help advance FARMroots goal of developing businesses acumen of Greenmarket producers
• Contribute to a highly productive, collaborative and positive work environment.

 Ideal Qualifications

• Bachelors Degree at in agricultural management, business development, economics or related field. Advanced training in farm business management or economics preferred
• Minimum 5 years experience working in agricultural development and/or business development
• Experience working directly with farmers or seeking to enhance their business operations required
• Knowledge of agriculture and the “business side” of operating a farm business. Experience with farm financial planning preferred
• Excellent budget and project management skills and computer skills
• Ability to work independently, manage time and multiple clients and problem solve
• A passion for agriculture
• A valid driver’s license
