Farm Crew Member Maitri Farm

  • Date Posted February 13, 2015
  • Location Amenia, NY
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job Type Full-Time
Job Description Maitri Farm is hiring one farm crew member for mid-April through the end of October.
This is a great position for someone with some experience in commercial vegetable production who wants to be a part of a farm in its first year of operation and get a sense of what's involved in starting a farm business.

About Us: Located on 106 acres in Amenia, New York, Maitri Farm is named after the first of the four sublime states taught by the Buddha. Sometimes translated as “love” or “loving-kindness,” it is the disposition of love pervading in all directions and embracing all beings. We produce vegetables, eggs, honey, and pasture-raised meats. This is our first year at the farm, and we will be marketing our vegetables through a 50-75 member CSA in Connecticut, with possible farmers market sales as well. We plan to apply for organic certification this year, and will be planning our future expansion (with an eventual target of a 250 member CSA). For more info about our farm, check out our website at www.maitrifarmny.com.

Responsibilities:
The farm crew member's main responsibility will be to assist with the vegetable operation, with occasional animal chores and farmscape maintenance possible as well. We ask crew members (and ourselves!) to work approximately 45 hours/week, which includes our Saturday morning CSA distribution and/or farmers market, as well as rotating weekends on-call for greenhouse and animal chores. Tractor usage will depend on the experience of the applicant.

Qualifications:
This is not an educational position, and applicants should have at least one season of experience with commercial vegetable production and the physical requirements of working on a farm and being outside in all kinds of weather. A valid drivers license is also necessary. Punctuality, flexibility, a strong work ethic, and a desire to constantly improve your skills are all crucial. A love of work songs, great food, and the ability to weed and carry on a conversation at the same time are all pluses. All of the farm staff (crew member + vegetable manager + livestock manager) live together in on-farm housing, so it's important that we all get along well! We're both easy-going, friendly people who love what we do and we're very involved in the local community of young farmers.

Compensation:
$500/week, plus shared on-farm housing
