Assistant Farm Manager/Farm Crew Hall Brook Farm

Company description Hall Brook Farm is an organic vegetable farm located in Thorndike, Maine. 2018 will mark our 5th year in business. We grow about 7 acres of produce and another 2-3 acres of dry beans, which we sell for seed. We sell our produce exclusively through wholesale markets in the Portland area. We focus on growing a handful of crops in order to maintain the highest quality possible, increase efficiency and meet our markets needs. We use our three draft horses for most of our tillage and cultivating, and employ the use of a tractor at times as well. Job description Assistant Farm Manager:
We are looking for a full-time assistant farm manager starting in the beginning of May and wrapping up the end of November. The farm manager would be responsible for helping with all aspects of the farm. Specific responsibilities would include but are not limited to: seeding, transplanting, harvesting, washing produce, caring and tending for crops as they grow, weeding, instructing and managing part-time crew members, operating a tractor. We will take whatever time is necessary to get the right person trained in all of our systems. We are looking for someone who can gain an awareness of not only what we need to do that day but what the rest of the week holds as well; someone who can react to situations that arise and make the appropriate decisions in the moment. The assistant farm manager would work alongside the farmers most of the time, but there would be times when they would need to work independently or with other crew members. 
Compensation would be a weekly stipend based on experience and an end of the season bonus. The amount of the bonus would depend on an individuals quality of work, but could be substantial. Work would be Monday-Friday, and hours can vary from week to week but 40-50 hours a week is average. Housing is not included. All the vegetables you can eat are, as well as a modest meat stipend, from animals raised on our farm.

Job requirements:
-at least 2 seasons working on a commercial vegetable operation
-ability to lift 50 lbs above your waist
-a good attitude and a willingness to learn
-a good instinct about food handling safety
-ability to work long hours doing monotonous tasks
-ability to take and give direction and work in a team effectively
-must be able to work in all weather conditions from extreme heat to extreme cold

Desired qualifications:
-a drivers license
-experience operating a tractor
-willingness to handle large livestock
-reliable vehicle
 
We are also hiring 2-3 part-time crew members. Hours can be fexible, but consistency is essential. This is an hourly position, with compensation based on experience. All the vegetables you can eat included as well. We need crew members to help primarily with weeding, transplanting, harvesting and washing produce. Housing is not included.
