We are looking for teachers who have expertise in subject areas not covered by our current faculty. In particular, we are looking for the following cuisines and subject areas: Central America, Caribbean, South America, Africa, Mediterranean, Middle East, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Regional North American, butchery, cooking fundamentals and technique. We are looking for instructors who can teach on a regular basis, about 1-2x/month.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan your classes (write timelines, shopping lists, equipment needs) and test and write recipes
  • Purchase hard-to-find ingredients (we will reimburse you)
  • Meet with Program Director to plan classes on a quarterly basis
  • You will have an opportunity to teach classes and cook dinners for private clients.
 

Requirements:

  • 2+ years of professional cooking and/or teaching experience (or equivalent)
  • Personal experience and passion for the cuisine or technique you are teaching
  • Serv-Safe Food Handling certified
  • Must be available for evening and/or weekend work
  • Must be able to stand for at least 8 hours
  • Must be able to lift 20 pounds

You will report to our Program Director, who is responsible for planning our entire calendar of public and private programming.

We are also looking for instructors who can teach one or both of these kids' camps this summer. The camps are daily from 9-1 at 18 Reasons through a partnership with the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco. Compensation is $25/hour, including time for planning and prep:
 
MOLECULAR GASTRONOMY • Grades 6 – 8 • July 16 – 20
Experiment with the molecular properties of food and discover how catalyzing ingredients can present delicious dishes in new and interesting ways. Discover citrus cooking, jellification, invisible pasta, effervescent fruit, and become a culinary artist in this 1 week intro class to the science of cuisine.

SWEET TOOTH PARLOR • Grades 3 – 5 • July 23 – 27
Gingerbread cakes, fried cream pies, banana boats and root beer floats! Make indulgent treats like homemade ice cream and molten brownies in this pastry parade of a camp that will bring a whole new meaning to 'leaving room for dessert.'
 



BENEFITS OF TEACHING AT 18 REASONS:
Promotion via 18 Reasons network, free 18 Reasons membership, free meal at your events, free class spots in 18 Reasons events (3 per year per instructor who has taught greater than 5 public classes). Support: we ticket, promote, shop, staff, set-up and clean-up for all of your classes!


COMPENSATION   This position is PAID per class or dinner. Public class stipends begin at $200, but increase by $50 with every 5 classes you teach at 18 Reasons. Stipends cap at $350/class. Private event stipends are $400 for a private class or $600 for a private dinner. 18 Reasons covers all food and equipment costs for classes and dinners.
