Job description

The University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) seeks a dynamic and innovative professional to provide statewide support and coordination for 4-H science and environmental education programs. This is a full-time public service faculty appointment based in Athens, Georgia. There are more than 300 full-time and part-time faculty and staff members in Athens and the six 4-H facilities in Georgia who support the district and county 4-H faculty and staff members who, in turn, deliver the 4-H program at the county level.

Additional Requirements

Candidates must have a master’s degree in an appropriate discipline closely related to the sciences, STEM fields, environmental studies, and/or education. Candidates should demonstrate expertise in program development and evaluation, have an appreciation and understanding of Extension and 4-H programs, and have an understanding of the diverse programming offered by Georgia 4-H. Candidates should have excellent organizational skills and be able to manage multiple programs. Candidates must also have achieved the rank of Public Service Assistant (or equivalent) or have a documented record of achievement that qualifies the candidate for placement in the public service track as defined in the Guidelines for Appointments and Promotion (http://outreach.uga.edu/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/2017-Promotions-Guidelines.pdf). Excellent interpersonal and public relations skills are required, along with good oral and written communication skills. Travel throughout the state of Georgia is a requirement of this position, and state vehicles are not always available. Candidates must be willing to provide the means for business travel to complete this essential job function. Frequent evening and weekends are required. 

The specialist reports to the Associate State 4-H Leader for UGA Extension in CAES and is accountable for the following responsibilities:
• Providing direction and vision to 4-H science programs (to include STEM-related programs)
• Coordinating the statewide Georgia 4-H Environmental Education program delivered at all six 4-H facilities
• Coordinating assigned Georgia 4-H statewide events, contests and awards, including website maintenance and communications with participants, collaborators, and donors
• Collaborating with other Georgia 4-H state staff in developing, facilitating, and evaluating 4-H Youth programs
• Seeking grants and private gifts (in cooperation with the Georgia 4-H Foundation) to support assigned programs
• Serving as principal investigator for program area grants
• Recruiting and training volunteers to assist with programs and activities
• Training and supporting county-based faculty in science programming
• Developing and maintaining curricula and training materials to address science content areas; ensuring that curricula materials match Georgia Department of Education standards
• Other duties as assigned to support the overall goals of Georgia 4-H
