Twenty Paces is a dairy farm and creamery operation located on leased land at Bellair Farm, just south of Charlottesville, VA. We focus on seasonal, farmstead, raw sheep milk cheeses utilizing management intensive grazing practices. 

Internship description Internship will cover all aspects of the operation of a farmstead dairy and creamery with a focus on animal husbandry.

Tasks- milking, rearing of ewe lambs, daily fence moves, barn/parlor cleaning, mucking, mowing, general farm maintenance, milk transfer, milk house cleaning, washing cheese, packaging cheese, dishwashing, farmers markets, and record keeping.

Learning opportunities- Management Intensive Grazing, sheep husbandry, artisanal cheese production, and small business management.

Housing- Provided. Intern will live in a camper parked adjacent to the creamery. The camper has a bedroom, living area, dining table, and small but functioning kitchenette. A full bathroom with washer/dryer is located in the creamery office, along with a larger communal kitchen space. Wifi is available. The intern will be the only member of the Twenty Paces crew living on the farm. However there are a number of households, including a intern house with multiple interns, associated with the Bellair Farm CSA on the east side of the farm which is a 5 min walk or 1 min ATV ride (Twenty Paces occupies the west side of the farm). Bellair Farm is a beautiful historic farm bordering the Hardware River, covering over 1000 acres with multiple ponds and walking trails. Downtown Charlottesville is a 15 min drive and the closest grocery store is 10 mins. Numerous breweries, wineries and cideries are all close by, hiking opportunities including the Appalachian Trail abound, and the James River is only about 10 mins south with rafting, canoeing and fishing.

Dates- March-October 2019. Prefer candidates who can commit to the entire season. 

Experience/Requirements- Some farm or dairy experience desired but not required.
Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
Must be able to perform strenuous manual labor at times.
Early mornings and long hours required, particularly during lambing season and early lactation.

Stipend- $800/month to start, potential for increases for the right person. Compensation this position is : stipend / non-monetary compensation
