Micro dairy/farm help Rabbit Head Farm

  • Date Posted November 09, 2018
  • Location Hardy, VA
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job type Internship/Apprentice
Company description
Hi! We are a small family farm and micro dairy in Franklin County, Virginia. We are working to restore a neglected hill farm (almost all permanent pasture) and establish a viable farm business on 15 acres (with hopes of future expansion). We currently milk two Jersey /Jersey cross cows and several Nubian goats; raise heritage hogs and some poultry; and grow fruit and vegetables. Fruit and vegetable production, as well as poultry, are primarily for our consumption. Though, we do have a 26x36 high tunnel and plan to explore winter produce production for market. We have more ideas than time to pursue them. Help us grow!
Internship description We are looking for an energetic individual or couple to assist us in growing our farm enterprise. We are in our 30's, new to farming, and have more resources and ideas than time (one of us is a stay at home mother and the other is a partner at a local law firm). The bulk of our farm work outside of daily chores takes place on the weekends. This is where you (or ya'll!) come in.

There will be a fairly modern travel trailer onsite. It's comfortable and plenty warm! We will also provide you with a share of what we produce (milk, meat, eggs, vegetables, and fruit).  In exchange, you will work on the farm part-time (hours TBD). Our farm is close to Roanoke, VA, so finding work off the farm is possible, and we can be flexible about working around town job hours. More excitingly, there are plenty of opportunities for an enterprising individual to earn income on the farm, and for the right person we will provide some capital and infrastructure. So bring your ideas! `

The ideal person is hard working, handy, an early riser, motivated, and possesses a positive attitude and willingness to "get in there". Experience with orcharding, viticulture, gardening, and livestock management are all helpful though not required. Where there is a lack of experience, common sense and a little grit go a long way. Compensation this position is : room & board, barter
