Organic Farm Worker The Farm at Sunnyside

  • Date Posted December 10, 2018
  • Location Washington, VA
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description We are a certified organic farm located at the foothills of the Shenandoah National Park in Rappahannock Co, VA. In 2019, we will grow about 15 acres of vegetables and cover crops and dabble in grains. We have a 10 acre fruit orchard, a flock of 400 laying hens and an on-site compost operation. The farm is managed by Stacey Carlberg and Casey Gustowarow. You can learn a bit more about us on the Farmer-to-Farmer Podcast.

We are passionate about regenerative agriculture, environmental conservation and inspiring new growers. We enjoy growing high quality produce for our crew, customers and local community. We participate in two local beer/food festivals at our local brewery because Farmer Casey loves cooking AND likes beer. We sell the majority of our produce through farmer's markets, but have a CSA and wholesale relationships with a few restaurants.

We are striving to create more permanent jobs on our farm for more than one season. We are looking for workers to join our farm family and all the ups and downs it may hold for the growing season. If you like it here and we like you, there are opportunities to stay for multiple years with added benefits (including health care and retirement). (If you have already tried farming and know you like it - let's see if you like it here!)

About the managers: Stacey and Casey have been farming for 12 years. They both have ecology/biology backgrounds and found farming to be a career that meshes with their desire to improve the environment. They were managers at Potomac Vegetable Farms for 4 years and have been managing The Farm at Sunnyside for the past 4 years. Stacey loves creating beautiful market displays, coming up with more efficient farm systems and training new workers. Casey loves growing a wide diversity of crops (especially hot peppers), cooking and investigating ways to improve soil health.

It is the intention of the managers to steward the land and our employees to the best of our abilities. More information on our website. Job description We are looking for one or two experienced farm workers to join our team for 2019 - with potential for full-time/longer term employment following our first year working together.

About the job:
Workers will be involved in most aspects of farm work, including planting, weeding, harvesting, processing and marketing vegetables. These are back straining, sometimes tedious jobs, done in all kinds of weather.

Our hours are typically 7:30 or 8 until 5 or 6 with a one or one and a half hour lunch break. Market days are longer. Days off are typically Sunday or Monday. You will work between 40-60 hours per week depending on the time of year, with one day off per week. Twice a month, you get two days off per week. When you have two days off it's Sunday-Mon, or Mon-Tues. Seasonal farm workers also have unpaid vacation time. Employees can request other days off for vacation or special occasions. (We don't want you to miss your best friend's wedding!

First year workers receive some individual areas of responsibility which may include: high tunnel management, CSA management, wholesale packing, wash and pack room oversight, poultry care. Returning workers receive more responsibilities including market management, wholesale management, tractor driving and field management.

Compensation: Hourly pay DOE, starting at $9.00. Housing provided - shared house with one other co-worker, each on your own floor with bedroom, bathroom and living space. Kitchen and laundry are shared. Access to many vegetables and eggs. Also, attendance at local farm tours through our CRAFT program.

Please visit our website for more details about the job.

Ideal candidates have worked on a farm before AND know they like the ups and downs of the season, doing physical labor and being at the mercy of Mother Nature. Candidates should be ready for more responsibility, want to set a good example for new team members and have a desire to continue their education/experience in agriculture. And, be malleable to our systems and how we like to do things.

Key qualities include:
  • ability to follow instructions even if you have other ideas about how to do a job
  • a positive attitude and commitment to doing good work (asking "what else can I do?")
  • enjoyment in working as part of a team (in sports or in previous jobs)
  • experience working outdoors or doing physical labor
  • desire to learn about agriculture and why we've chosen our methods
  • patience for some unpredictability in your routine (Mother Nature does what she wants.)
  • experience living in community or patience for sharing a living space (This is a must. )
  • willingness to unplug a bit (if you need to 'gram every hour, this is not the job for you.)
  • excitement to live in a rural setting
  • making time to take care of yourself (you know: eating well, hydrating, sleeping, journaling, playing music, yoga, doing your laundry, taking a vacation)
  • BONUS - being excited about cooking, learning how to cook and sharing meals.

About the surroundings: Rappahannock County is a beautiful, rural county with rolling hills inhabited by an interesting mix of artists, farmers, DC area commuters and small business owners. It borders the Shenandoah National Park, so is a good destination for outdoor enthusiasts. It is about 1.5 hours from Washington, DC and 1 hour from Charlottesville. There are no stoplights, no commercial chain stores and spotty cell coverage in the county. There are some interesting small local businesses (two breweries, an apothecary, a yoga studio+ gym, a pizza kitchen). The towns of Front Royal, Warrenton and Culpeper have more commercial shopping centers and are all about ½ hour away.  We highly suggest bringing a car for getting off the farm and running errands

What should I expect? We have 10 years experience of managing crews and think we are humane bosses. If it's going to be super hot and muggy, we try to do the harder tasks in the morning. If it's going to rain cats and dogs, we try to harvest before the deluge. HOWEVER, this is a farm job - and you should be prepared to be out in all weather conditions to help the team finish its tasks.

We anticipate a learning curve – and you will get better, more efficient and more confident as the season progresses. It can be humbling to not immediately be great at a task. We will correct you and teach you so the team can be more efficient overall. We don't want to waste your time or ours.

Farming is unique, as you typically live and work in the same community. This is tough for some folks to see the same faces day in and day out. But, it's also an opportunity to build long-lasting friendships as we've seen many a time in the past. We share lots of stories, insights and good meals with each other throughout the season.
