Ananda Ashram is a diverse yoga retreat located 45 miles outside of NYC. We have been in operation since 1965. We offer various programs and disciplines through out the year including our Core programs - Yoga classes, Sanskrit class, Daily fire ceremony and meditation, various talks and discourse concerning Vedanta, All Faiths and other religious philosophies.  We often will have guest speakers and uplifting dance and music programs all seasons.. We also have groups that rent our facilities through out the year. The Ashram is host to the International Schools of East/West unity. They include the Kathak school of Dance, East/West School of Music and the Yoga School.

Job Description: Lead Cook

Ananda Ashram Kitchen serves lacto-vegetarian, primarily vegan and gluten free meals. We offer a creative space for individuals interested in healthy practices and food preparation.

Seasonal Lead Cook: This position requires a minimum four-six month commitment. Benefits include access to Ashram facilities and core programs such as daily group meditations, Sanskrit classes, Yoga, discounted workshops, musical and cultural events.Compensation: room and board, and a monthly stipend. This is a 35-hour per week position.

Short Term Lead Cook/Kitchen Assistant: This position requires a minimum one- month commitment.
Benefits: as listed above.
Compensation: include shared housing accommodation and meals. This is a 30-hour per week position.

Lead Cook Responsibilities:

  • Plan meals and lead a team of staff and volunteers (1-3 people) to prepare buffet style vegetarian meals for up to 80 people;

  • Ensure cleanliness of the kitchen after meal prep shift;

  • Work with the kitchen manager, lead cooks and other volunteers to maintain peaceful and conscious kitchen environment. Qualifications:

  • Previous lead cook experience is a strong plus but not required (will train right individuals);

  • Vegetarian/vegan, gluten free. Some Ayurvedic cooking familiarity or interest;

  • Familiarity with basic kitchen operations, safety protocols, and cleanliness;

  • Team player with good leadership and communication skills;

  • Ability to work under high pressure and time constraints.
