Job description

What we’re looking for:

FoodCorps seeks an experienced finance professional to lead our Finance Team during a period of significant organizational growth and evolution.  As FoodCorps matures from a promising start-up to a field-leading social enterprise, the Senior Director of Finance will oversee FoodCorps’ financial operations and legal standing, drive an organization-wide culture of accountability, work effectively as a thought partner to senior leaders and empower fiscally sound and legally compliant decision-making at all levels.

Reporting to the Chief of Staff and Financial Officer, the Senior Director of Finance will have oversight for an operating budget that is currently $18 million and is slated to grow to $22 million by 2020, supporting an organization that works in 18+ states and has 225 AmeriCorps members and 90 employees.  The Senior Director of Finance will be responsible for overseeing all fiscal responsibilities for the organization, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting and budget processes, conducting strategic analysis of business performance and forecasting, and ensuring that we maintain excellent legal standing.

Core Responsibilities

  • Strategy and Leadership
    • Spearhead growth and scenario modeling and forecasting of cash flow as FoodCorps expands its national footprint, grows the budget from $18m to $22m, and develops new supply-side programming
    • Apply financial learnings and a deep understanding of FoodCorps economic model to the development of the above organizational strategies
    • Work with members of the leadership team to improve the sustainability of the organization’s revenue model, especially through the pursuit of earned income
    • Ensure that organizational resource allocation aligns with organizational strategies; collaborate with members of the leadership team on spending and staffing decisions
    • Collaborate with the development team and the Grant Finance Manager to determine policies and processes for future fundraising and to ensure high-level communication and collaboration between finance and fundraising
    • Provide leadership to the team, work to create consistency across functions and model a customer-services oriented approach to providing exceptional service to both internal and external stakeholders
    • Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach; set objectives and priorities; monitor and evaluate results
    • Elevate the roles of finance and legal compliance in people’s day-to-day decision-making
  • Financial and Compliance Management
    • Provide updated and frequent financial and budgeting insights and analysis to the Executive Team
    • Create dashboards and other tools to clearly articulate the organization’s financial position, legal standing and goals to senior staff and leadership
    • Work closely with the Controller and the Finance Manager to oversee all financial reporting including monthly Balance Sheets and P&L Statements and to ensure sound AP/AR and payroll functions
    • Develop strong working relationships with Board Finance and Development Committee and Audit Committee; report out quarterly financials
    • Work closely with the Grant Finance Manager to oversee grant budgeting, grant tracking and reporting, revenue recognition and government grant compliance
    • Ensure that all appropriate tax filings and audit financials, including Federal A133 and IRS 990s, are accurate and submitted on a timely basis
    • Ensure that staff across the organization are proactively engaging finance and compliance staff in decision-making
    • Collaborate with the Controller to identify potential areas of vulnerability and risk; oversees the development of corrective action plans for resolution of problematic issues, and provides general guidance on how to avoid or deal with similar situations in the future
    • Work closely with the Controller to ensure the organization operates in compliance with all appropriate internal and external rules and systems of control (laws, taxes, insurance, state and charitable registrations, etc)


Qualifications

  • 10+ years of senior financial leadership experience in a nonprofit or business environment
  • Strong leadership skills including a transparent, collaborative style, and demonstrated experience leading teams to excellent results
  • Highly strategic mindset, including the ability to set a vision and execute on it
  • Strong organizational and financial management skills and excellent budgeting and business planning skills; experience with nonprofit/fund accounting a strong plus
  • Strong affinity for technology and experience working with financial systems
  • A demonstrated ability to think strategically in seizing opportunities, accessing risks, streamlining systems, and reducing expenses
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and an ability to connect with and present to a variety of stakeholders including staff, leadership and the Board of Directors
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field; CPA, CMA or Master’s preferred
