The SUNY Adirondack College Farm is a 1-acre urban farm that organically grows produce for our culinary restaurant, dining services and campus food hub. Located on the northern edge of campus in Queensbury NY, the farm is worked by students in various academic programs. These students may be engaged in initiatives related to agriculture business, sustainable farming, food justice and food access.
 

We are seeking a part-time Farm Manager who is environmentally and socially motivated, creative, and energetic to manage and grow our College Farm. The Farm Manager is expected to direct day-to-day operations and guide students to grow about 20,000 pounds of produce in organically managed market gardens and high tunnels. This position is equal parts grower, seller, innovator and educator. Students are integral in the process and our goal is to have a welcoming and inclusive farm that produces as much food as it can and works with all of those who are interested.

Job description
Major Responsibilities

The Farm Manager will work largely independently to guide market garden programs and build relationships with campus dining services, culinary program, facilities, and academic departments.
 

The position will require some degree of flexible working hours such as evenings and weekends as needed during the growing season or to accommodate outreach activities or other responsibilities related to the SUNY Adirondack Farm.
 

They will support the Sustainability Office’s mission of creating a thriving campus community that integrates environmental stewardship, social equity, and economic vitality into academics and operations, and giving students an opportunity to develop skills, explore solutions, and foster relationships that will prepare them to tackle complex environmental and social challenges on campus and beyond.

 

Requirements

  • Ability to work independently as well as having strong teamwork skills, have a strong work ethic with exceptional quality and efficiency, ability to lead others, problem solve, work with a diverse population, and excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Knowledge of agricultural business management and organic crop production planning, risk management, soil fertility management, safe operation of farm equipment, disease and insect management, harvest and post-harvest handling, Good Agricultural Practices, water systems, composting systems, and marketing.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and manage sales invoicing and the farm budget, to manage assets such as tools and labor resourcefully, to organize student and volunteer schedules, and to maintain records.
  • Ability to develop marketing materials, annual reports and to collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders from faculty and staff to students and community partners. 
  • Responsible for the College's compost operation as well as all operations regarding the sales of the produce to Chartwells, the Culinary Program and at the Weekly Farm Market.
  • Has a thorough understanding of the physical requirements of working on a farm and being outside in all kinds of weather, minimal lifting or carrying objects up to 40 lbs.


Salary Range: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour

Employment Type:  12 month - Part Time/ Non-Exempt
 

Additional Information  

In addition, this position may grow to include teaching college courses in the Agricultural Business degree, such as Sustainable Food and Soil Science, so those candidates with a Master’s Degree are encouraged to apply.
