The San Mateo County School Farm (SMCSF), operated by THP, is a 2 acre diversified fruit and vegetable farm in El Granada, California. SMCSF grows annual vegetables, berries, cut flowers and culinary herbs. Produce is primarily used in THP’s educational programming and sold to local restaurants and at the Coastside Farmers’ Market. Over 3,000 students visit SMCSF annually to learn about sustainable agriculture, nutrition, and nature connection.

Job description Position: Hatch School Intensive Garden Program Instructor

Organization
The HEAL Project (THP) runs unique, hands on, programming in school classrooms and on the San Mateo County School Farm. Our programming cultivates healthy lifestyle habits in students while inspiring environmental and agricultural awareness through a comprehensive, interactive curriculum.

Job summary
This part time position will be responsible for the following:
● Running a gardening program for elementary students 3 mornings per week during the school year. The program leader will be expected to organize materials and follow existing THP curricula at Hatch Elementary in Half Moon Bay. 1:1 instruction/programming to planning time.
● 10 hours/week in fall and 14-16 hours/week in spring.
● Additional hours in spring are partly dedicated to Seeds & Sprouts preschool program at Hatch Elementary.
● Additional hours in spring are partly dedicated to leading Garden Club during lunch recess for grades 1-5 at Hatch Elementary.
● Can combine this position with that of the part time farm educator to get 4-5 days of work per week, averaging 20-25 hours/week year-round.

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:
● Deliver nutrition education and agricultural instruction following THP curriculum, obtain and prepare materials, and foster a vital, pleasant, and safe learning environment for students and program participants.
● Lead students in seasonal cooking activities and provides cooking demonstrations
● Lead students in farming and gardening activities including planting, weeding, harvesting and composting.
● Participate in THP staff meetings and trainings
● Actively contribute to social media as assigned and write updates for school and organizational newsletters
● Available for occasional Saturday work leading volunteer groups or filling in at the THP Farmers’ Market booth
● Maintain THP’s routine records, tracking and reporting.
● Reports to the Executive Director

Preferred experience and qualities
● Experience leading children, youth and adults in outdoor setting, understanding of farming and/or gardening and the ability to communicate these concepts in a fun and engaging way to diverse age groups.
● Classroom management/group management skills
● Fluency in Spanish
● Comfort and confidence working independently
● Creativity, flexibility, and willingness to learn

Additionally the Program Instructor:
● Will maintain responsible behavior; work both independently and as part of a team; comply with organizational tenets as outlined in The HEAL Project Employee handbook
● Will utilize interpersonal & communication skills; computer skills to maintain routine communication, etc.
● Will utilize own vehicle for school to get to different sites; provide proof of CA drivers license & insurance
● Will perform physical tasks related to garden maintenance; able to lift 40 lbs
● Will submit to fingerprinting & DOJ background check to work with children

Compensation: $17-$18 per hour. Position provides Paid Time Off and paid holidays.
