RESPONSIBILITIES

We are looking for a Farm Manager who is passionate about local food systems and the environment, excited about innovative small scale farming techniques, and who has the people skills to work cooperatively on a small team. This person would have a foundational role in shaping Wanderwood’s farm, expanding as we grow, and building a farm crew with a positive mindset and an open heart.

The farm manager will be the farm’s head honcho and responsible for all aspects including:

  • Soil testing, cover crop and amendment planning, on-farm composting
  • Veggie and flower crop planning, bed/rotation planning,
  • Growing food! Seed starting, irrigation, pest management, harvest scheduling
  • Produce safety and best practices for health and safety
  • Season extension planning and protected growing set up and execution
  • Management and organization of farm crew
  • Budgeting for farm priorities including equipment recommendations and upgrades
  • Long term farm planning and work with NRCS/USDA
  • Organic certification and requisite record keeping
  • Marketing and sales management

ESSENTIAL SKILLS + CERTIFICATIONS

  • At least 2-3 seasons of organic growing experience in Zone 5B / or a comparable Maine context
  • Demonstrated market farm credentials (1-2 seasons of managerial commercial farming experience preferred)
  • Patience and a willingness to teach the farm crew + guests of the farm
  • People skills – positive, outgoing, warm, and welcoming; ability to work through disagreements and find workable solutions; solid sense of humor
  • People management skills + farm crew scheduling experience, with special attention and care towards health and safety of employees and farm animals
  • Season extension and protected growing experience
  • Basic animal husbandry skills and experience with rotational grazing
  • Proactive mindset; calm and resolute problem-solving
  • Record of successful budgeting and market crop sales
  • Customer service experience
  • Schedule flexibility + team-oriented mindset
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills, high attention to detail
  • Basic carpentry and maintenance skills
  • Valid Maine Driver’s license, good driving record, and reliable transportation
  • Heavy-lifting as needed; applicants should be able to lift and carry approximately 50 lbs comfortably and safely
BONUS SKILLS
  • Experience with MOFGA’s organic certification process / farm transition
  • Love of cooking
  • Experience with digital + social media marketing

SALARY + BENEFITS

  • Salary is commensurate with experience, and will range from $25 – 35k annually with opportunity for growth as the business + position expands.
  • We do not currently offer benefits, but would gladly provide a stipend to contribute to a Maine Marketplace health care plan.
