Our mission is to use only organic ingredients, to support our local grain economy by featuring CA grown grains, and to use the sourdough process to leaven all of our breads. Currently we bring our breads to the Oakland and Berkeley community through Farmer’s Markets. We are working towards opening a retail bakery in the Oakland area.

We are looking for a baker who is passionate about the art and skill of bread baking. We are always on a quest to improve and make the best bread we possibly can. We are committed to using only sourdough in leavening our bread, and CA -grown whole grains in all of our products. 

Position Purpose:

The baker functions as an artisan with direct impact on the quality of bread they are handling, and is responsible for ensuring the highest quality bread is produced within their power.

 

Responsibility Level:

The baker reports direct to the owner of Base Camp Bakery, or lead baker in times when the owner is not readily available.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Accurately weighing ingredients
  • Preparing bread doughs
  • Maintaining sourdough cultures
  • Monitoring dough development and fermentation
  • Accurately dividing, preshaping, and shaping bread dough
  • Baking various breads
  • Packaging bread in bags
  • Loading bread into delivery vehicle
  • Washing dishes, general cleaning of equipment, work surfaces, and surrounding areas
  • Performing other duties as assigned

 

Essential Physical Functions:

The baker must be able to understand and communicate clearly in English. They will be required to work an entire shift while standing. The ability to lift and carry 50 pounds is a must. The baker will often be exposed to wet conditions, extremely hot surfaces and equipment, cleaning chemicals, fumes, gases, and odors. Information regarding hazardous chemicals in the workplace is available.

 

Essential Mental Functions:

The baker works in an often loud environment, with pressure to finish job tasks in a timely manner. They must be able to remain focused, follow a set of procedures and organize their own work while maintaining a clean, safe, and friendly work environment. The work requires attention to detail, a strong sense of urgency, and a drive to do the right thing.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Professional bread-making experience preferred, but not a must
  • Valid Food Handlers Card
  • Proficiency in scaling, mixing, shaping, and baking of sourdough bread.
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work cleanly, efficiently, and with a sense of urgency.
  • Good interpersonal skills, able to maintain a positive and healthy work environment under stressful situations
  • High level of personal and professional integrity and ethics, as no corners will be cut
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time and lift up to 50 pounds repeatedly

Compensation:
Starting pay is $17/hr with no prior experience, but more D.O.E. Compensation this position is : hourly, $15/hr + Application instructions
