Each year, Isles reaches thousands of central New Jersey residents with opportunities for at-risk youth job training, affordable housing development, financial literacy training, home-ownership counseling, community gardening, environmental health and education, community organizing, and regional planning. Job description The Urban Agriculture Coordinator is part of the Isles Community Planning & Development (CP&D) Team which collaborates with residents and community stakeholders to identify community concerns and priorities, create action-oriented, community-led neighborhood plans, and secure resources to sustain neighborhood revitalization over the long term. To do this, we support community and school gardens, offer food and nutrition education, coordinate neighborhood redevelopment, support economic development, clean up and activate underutilized properties, create cost-effective recreation programs, and advocate for policy and program changes. In addition, Isles leads city-wide research and planning initiatives related to violence reduction, creative placemaking, and food systems. CP&D’s work represents a holistic effort to positively change perception and experience of neighborhoods, streets, and communities across Trenton, integrating urban agriculture, real estate development, placemaking, and planning.

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Urban Agriculture Coordinator supports the successful implementation of projects related to the Isles Garden Support Network, food access, community education, and community beautification. The position includes office/administrative work as well as hands-on work and educational support in Isles-managed gardens and in community and school gardens.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop and manage community and/or school gardens
  • Develop and present garden, food and nutrition related education in a school environment
  • Promote gardening, nutrition, farm to school, and environmental education through outreach and public workshops
  • Plan, coordinate, and maintain community beautification projects
  • Develop opportunities for volunteers and coordinate individual and group volunteer efforts
  • Develop productive and long-lasting relationships with community and corporate volunteers
  • Identify sources of funding and assist with writing grants and proposals to successfully obtain funding
  • Implement gardening, farming and/or horticulture techniques in an urban setting

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Gardening, farming and/or horticulture experience
  • Community education experience
  • Experience working with youth
  • Cultural competency working with people of diverse backgrounds
  • Project coordination and/or team leadership experience
  • Basic carpentry, construction, and/or mechanical skills
  • Experience using basic lawn maintenance tools such as mowers, trimmers and tillers
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Valid driver’s license in good standing with insurable driving record
  • Ability to maintain State Central Registry (SCR) clearance and fingerprint clearance throughout the duration of employment
  • Spanish language proficiency preferred
Compensation this position is : hourly, $15/hr + Application instructions
