Intern/Crew Leader persephone farm

  • Date Posted December 26, 2019
  • Location indianola, WA
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description
Beautiful Persephone Farm is located about an hour from Seattle, across the water by ferry. We grow mixed vegetables and cut flowers to sell at a weekly farmer's market, through a CSA, and to local restaurants. We also have a thriving wedding flower business. Some say Persephone grows 10 acres of vegetables on just two cultivated acres! We do this by employing organic, human scale, bio-intensive practices. The farm lies in an idyllic setting within walking distance of a sandy swimming beach, miles of wooded trails, and abundant wildlife. Lovely small town atmosphere in cool, lush Western WA. Persephone is a busy, fun and social place, always lots going on!

Internship description We have hosted interns for over 25 years and have developed a well rounded and, in many cases, life-changing immersion experience for those who come to work alongside us in our small-scale veggie and flower fields.
We are also seeking a six month crew leader/intern mentor to assist our team.

We particularly encourage those interested in starting their own sustainable small farms to apply. Couples are welcome. Pets will be considered on a case by case basis. There is the opportunity to stay for more than one season if we are a good fit.

Many of our former apprentices are now successful growers, building on our creative model of niche marketing and the authenticity of our growing practices. We strongly believe that each year’s group of interns is our most important crop, as they take their season of learning with us out into the world to affect positive change.

Educational Opportunities: Lots of hands-on instruction and responsibility in many aspects of the farm's operation. Helpers work closely with the woman farmer and crew mentor who emphasize teaching in the fields as well as some behind-the-scenes business aspects of running the farm, from bookkeeping to spreadsheets, accounting, social media, and CSA communications. Our day to day is spent seeding, planting, weeding, harvesting, washing and packing produce and flowers. A diverse array of classes may be offered both on and off the farm, co-created with other farms in the area and WSU to round out the experience.  There is a wide range of skill-sharing opportunities offered within our larger close knit community. A few examples are fiber arts, bee keeping, herbal medicine making, wild crafting, crabbing, astrology.

Skills Desired: Agricultural experience is not required, though many past interns have already completed one or more seasons on a farm. In these cases, we have created a more advanced Internship opportunity to help them round out their experience.
A crew leader/intern mentor position is also available.

*energetic and positive attitude
*willingness to work and try hard
*self motivation
*good physical and mental health including strong back and knees
*flexibility- things are always shifting on a farm!
*a love of healthy cooking and eating- think EXCESS PRODUCE!
*good verbal communication skills- we spend a lot of time together and enjoy good conversation and inquisitiveness for a participatory learning and working environment.
*We prefer an unplugged work day where human connections and listening to the world around us supersedes electronic gadgets in the fields.
*Your own vehicle and valid driver's license
* A season-long commitment

Stipend: approx $750-$1,100 per month as the season progresses, including profit sharing, and, of course, the freshest food imaginable, in exchange for full time work.
Crew leader position is salaried at $2,000/month plus housing

Meals: Shared with other apprentices and crew leader in a communal kitchen. An abundance of farm fresh vegetable seconds are provided. Interns also have the opportunity to tend their own garden plots for experimentation and individual expression.

Housing: Housing and utilities are provided in cozy, wood-heated yurts or a tiny house on our quiet farm. We are a little more than an  hour, including ferry ride, from downtown Seattle. Yurts are electrified, furnished, and have wireless Internet access. There is a communal kitchen, shared bathroom and laundry.
