Communications Manager Bon Appétit Management Company

  • Date Posted January 16, 2020
  • Location Palo Alto, CA
  • Category Culinary / Media
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description

Bon Appétit Management Company’s philosophy is “food service for a sustainable future,” but don’t be misled by the food service part. Bon Appétit is a restaurant company that has been revolutionizing contract food service since 1987. Our leadership has been honored by the James Beard Foundation and Chefs Collaborative; covered by The New York Times and Fast Company; and we’re proud to count renowned chefs José Andrés, Traci Des Jardins, Susan Feniger, and many others as our partners.

We operate more than 1,000 cafés around the country for corporations, universities, and museums as well as award-winning public restaurants. Our chefs make everything from scratch — stocks, sauces, soups — from fresh, seasonal, mostly local ingredients. We also believe in changing the world through food. We’ve led our industry in socially and environmentally responsible sourcing, from sustainable seafood to cage-free eggs and pork raised without antibiotics.

Job description

The Communications Manager for Bon Appétit Management Company will support the director of communications and other members of the small communications team at this socially responsible company. We’re seeking a candidate with excellent writing and editing skills, a flexible writing voice finely attuned to nuance, strong attention to detail, and great organizational skills. Someone with a technical writing or corporate communications background, who also has a working knowledge of both food/cooking terms and food-related sustainability issues, would be a strong contender.

Ideally the Communications Manager position will be based in the Bay Area, but we will consider candidates for remote work if they:

  1. Live in a city with a strong Bon Appétit presence (Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Portland OR, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, Washington D.C.)
  2. Can travel to the Bay Area for team meetings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Write and edit copy for new-business proposals;
  • Assist in the writing, editing, and proofreading of Bravo, Bon Appétit’s quarterly, 80- to 120-page company magazine;
  • Handle sensitive communications requests from Bon Appétit chefs and managers regarding clients and guests;
  • Draft company wide communications about HR-related changes, safety messaging, and other internal topics;
  • Edit marketing collateral and wellness copy;
  • Occasionally draft press releases;
  • Handle other writing, editing, and proofreading tasks as directed.

Qualifications

  • Education: BA or BS degree in English, Communications, or Journalism preferred.
  • Professional experience: 5-10 years’ work experience to include corporate/nonprofit communications (including internal and crisis), university public affairs, technical writing, grant writing, or journalism, and ideally a stint in the restaurant or food service industries.
  • Software:
    • Understanding of advanced features of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
    • Strong familiarity with collaborating via Google Docs/Sheets and Dropbox
  • Qualities:
    • Experience writing clearly and concisely for multiple audiences with vastly different expectations.
    • Ability to juggle multiple projects under tight deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
    • Strong editing, grammar, and punctuation skills: able to apply AP Style (and memorize our exceptions to it), love debating things like em-dashes vs. parenthetical commas and colons, and can be relied on to check any questionable spellings.
    • Passion for great food and food experiences, as well as a basic level of general culinary and sustainability knowledge.
    • Strong self-motivation to complete projects at a high degree of excellence.
    • Organized, detail-oriented, and process-oriented.
    • Willingness to roll up your sleeves and get to work on a lean and nimble team.
    • Demonstrated success working without direct oversight.

Full-time associates at Bon Appétit are eligible for many benefits, including:
