  • Date Posted February 15, 2020
  • Location Needmore, PA
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description

This is a worker-run farm. Great opportunity to learn basics of raising sustainably-grown produce in PA's Allegheny Mountains. 2-hours from Washington/Baltimore. Beautiful farm in a valley - swimmable creek. Free WiFi. Our 47-year philosophy-to sell healthily grown food at affordable prices to farmers markets, co-ops, CSAs and universities in the DC/Baltimore area.

Our farm practices are Certified Naturally Grown (CNG) which exceed USDA organic standards.

Our staff run several farm markets and we offer a 60 family CSA. Each staff person takes turns working at our farm markets and preparing the CSA shares. Philosophically, the farm supports a policy of growing food sustainably and pricing it affordably in mixed income neighborhoods since 1972.

Check out these two videos that offer a look at our farm and practices.

Job description

Two positions open - one for someone who has worked on farms, with skills and experience;  and one for someone who wants to learn farming.

LIVE AND WORK ON PESTICIDE-FREE VEGETABLE/FRUIT FARM (Needmore, PA). This is a WORKER-RUN farm. We have experienced long-term staff and welcome folks who want to learn farming without chemicals. Staff needs to be in touch with the rhythm of farming, and as a staff learn what needs to be done, determine how the work will get done, talk about how to improve the process and provide input in all aspects of the farm operation. We are blessed with experienced long-term staff and welcome folks who want to learn sustainably-grown farming.

We look for folks (US citizens and those who are legally authorized to work in the United States) who are in good physical condition, non-smokers,  have a valid driver's license (not essential), love the outdoors and hard work!  and want to experience farming without pesticides, who can commit to the season (April - Nov), with a minimum of 2 months commitment, who understand that farming is not a 9-5 job, who love the earth and its gifts and can work in harmony as a staff.

EXPECT TO LEARN: all the basics of starting and running a farm including: starting seeds, greenhouse production, planting, fertilization, drip irrigation, high tunnel growing, "no-till organic," and cultivation. Our staff operate several farm markets and we offer a 60 family CSA. Each staff person takes turns working at our farm markets and preparing the CSA shares. Philosophically, the farm supports a policy of growing food sustainably and pricing it affordably in mixed income neighborhoods since 1972.

ELIGIBILITY
Good physical condition, non-smoker, valid driver's license, love outdoors/work hard.

ROOM/BOARD:
Own room, vegetarian lifestyle on the farm. Each staff has either their own room in the main farmhouse, or in one of the cabins (which can house 2-3 staff).

AVAILABILITY:
April-November. Minimum 2 months commitment. Start date negotiable.

Applicants need to be in good physical condition, enjoy working outdoors, and learn chemical-free farming; it's hard but rewarding work. The staff makes decisions together so learning to work as a team is essential. It's helpful to have a valid drivers' license. And mostly to be serious about your time commitment. It is very hard to get staff mid-season, so we need folks who understand the rhythm of farming, love the earth and its gifts, can work in harmony as a staff and who are willing to stick to their commitment (barring unforeseen circumstances or the fit turns out not to be right!). We do our best to make the farm experience really rewarding and fun.

COMPENSATION:
PAID: Salary - $500-1500/month (based on experience/time commitment). Plus (your own) room and board. This is a seasonal position from April - November.  We ask for a minimum of a 2-month commitment. Start date is negotiable.
